A few weeks ago I took a photo of this homegrown monster as it entered the final stages of the cycle that started with a six-inch seedling that spread to cover a hundred square feet and produce a half-dozen of our favorite light summertime dessert sources. Home gardening seldom produces enough output to justify the material and financial input needed to “grow your own”. We never expect to save a ton of money on groceries or provide enough produce to feed us through an apocalypse but we have fun prepping the beds and barrels in the spring and rolling the dice in hopes of a bountiful harvest. This year was no different. We will enjoy our sixty or so pounds of watermelon and now know that cherry tomatoes literally go with every meal...and a few desserts.

Back to the only open wetlands this past weekend - another brutal hot day, but at least the lightning stayed away (it was 98 degrees with 90% humidity).  The bird life is still surprisingly good, despite the heat!

 

A black bellied whistling duck momma protecting her only remaining duckling (she started with 9, but the wetlands hadn't been kind to her brood):

A green iguana looked a bit annoyed that I was walking up his levee - he was sunning and didn't really want to move:

This green heron was doing a little stretching and wing-drying up on a dry stick over the water:

 

You don't have to go to the wetlands to see green iguanas in most of South Florida.  This one was in my backyard, chomping on some hibiscus leaves while I shot him from my pool:
