Your Advice Please....................

Hi

I need your advice.

I am booked on the Panama Canal Cruise December 20, 2020 from LA down the Mexican coast thru the Canal and back to FTL.  I know our ports here in South Florida are not open yet but I think the Mexican ports are.. I don;t think LA port is open yet.

I am bored out of mind and want to do something over the holidays.  Yes I know I live in Ft. Lauderdale and will be where a lot of people wish to be.............lol  Our % of virus is way down to less than 5%. I predict if after 14 days if there is not a spike after the Labor Day holiday weekend we will move into phase 2.

I want to plan a trip somewhere over the holidays once I decide what to do about this cruise. Our final payment is not until Oct 21. I want to start to look at places to go like maybe the Caribbean or even Mexico as much as I hate Mexico but don;t want to waste my time looking. Thought I might look for a resort all inclusive where i don;t have to go anywhere but relax. I asked my cruise planner at Princess and she has no idea and I asked her if it was selling and she said a little.

Here is my question.

Do you think based on where the cruise is going do you think it will go? I am not asking if you think cruises will go by my travel date. I am asking based on where the cruise is going do you think it will go?

Thank you in advance for your kindness and advice

Kathy

Unfortunately, I don’t think you’ll see any of the mainstream line start sailing until at least next summer, or maybe even next fall. Perhaps, if by some miracle, they come up with a vaccine, they may sail earlier. I wouldn’t plan on any away time until things ahve changed drastically. 😕😕

Slim and none - and Slim's ship has already sailed ...

load up your deposit until just under "cruise fare" - and hope for double FCC for a future cruise when it's 'officially' cancelled

Nobody can answer that with 100% certainty but, it's very doubtful that cruise will happen.  Los Angeles is probably under some of the strictest shut down orders in the country.   The mayor is threatening to turn off water and power to people that are having parties.  I can't even see how we'd get from that to allowing people in to sail on a cruise ship.  I also think that the cruise lines will start off with shorter sailings to begin with.  I'm booked for a 2 week sailing in the spring and I have little expectation that will even happen.

I'm 99.9% confident that your cruise will not sail.

If it does sail, odds are that the itinerary will change significantly.

The rates for all inclusive resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico seem to have gone up, as for many they are the only option.

Only a few islands are open now....others will follow, but each island has their own restrictions/requirements.

Mexico is currently wide open to tourism from the USA.

We are not allowed to link travel sites here, but if you are aware of the cruise booking site that has a "90 day ticker", they also have a site for all-inclusive resorts.

I wouldn't cruise in December 2020 even if the ship sails. The experience would not be what you consider a normal cruise vacation experience. There is also a risk at each port in Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia. Even if you stay on board those that go ashore could bring the virus back. We have resigned ourselves to a gap year or two.

I would rebook for a later date as i do not think the cruise will go We pushed our panama cruise from march 2021 all the way to 2022 If i was looking for a vacation right now i would look into the all inclusive resorts located on several caribbean islands some of these have reopened or will be open sooner than cruising

I would recommend going to an all inclusive in either the Riviera Maya section south of Cancun or Punta Cana.  Because of you wanting to travel over Christmas, airfare could be expensive as well as the resorts.  If you went a week or two earlier, you could probably save substantially.

Mexico has an uptick in Covid 19 and is not safe at this time. Canada has closed it's border to us, no cars no walking across the border unless you have a work permit. We are not welcome anywhere due to our uncontrolled outbreaks of the virus.

I have a cruise booked DEC 19 this year on the Royal and doubt it will sail. Since there will be full refunds up to 30 days out I will let Princess blink first and cancel and get more FCC's then I will be able to use in the next 2 years....................well maybe not since I'm going to book full suites 😃

That's true.  I read the other day that Mexico is grossly under-reporting their Covid-19 deaths.  It is very bad there and I cannot imagine the port stops would be safe in that part of the world this December.  Get your money back now or wait until they offer an FCC.

Just curious why you hate Mexico so much and still you book a cruise with Mexican ports.

Come to New York. We are under 1 % and our restaurants are opening for indoor dining. The Christmas tree will be lit and decorations up. The stores are open . Broadway will probably still be closed but the Metropolitan Museum of Art is open.

Right now, Florida is still under a mandatory two week quarantine when entering NY. I wouldn't put money down on a vacation that might still have quarantine regulations. That's not going to be fun!    But yes, the city is beautiful and has lots to offer.

Here are the answers to your suggestions.

I would love to go to NY but I also love Broadway. I thought of that and nixed it. St. Lucia doesn;t really have any covid so I am going to look there.

As to why I booked a cruise to Mexican ports. I don;t like answering things that off topic which that is but I will this once. I did not book the cruise for the Mexican ports and planned on staying on the ship. I wanted the canal. I have been thru the Mirafloes locks and wanted to do the new ones. I don;t like answering questions off topic because too many people on CC hijack a topic and I think it is wrong.

Anyway please keep up the suggestions. I have written some down and will be looking at them.

Thanks again

Kathy

Going on a cruise that stops in Mexico seems like a much better idea than NewYork these days.

Why?  If you think the likelihood of catching covid-19 is less in Mexico that is not the case.

Mexico's positivity rate last week was above 40% (https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus-testing#the-positive-rate-a-crucial-metric-for-understanding-the-pandemic).

New York's positivity rate is among the lowest in the US: .9%  For comparison, the rate in Florida is 13.6% and in Virginia it is 7.6%. (https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus-testing#the-positive-rate-a-crucial-metric-for-understanding-the-pandemic)

My friends went to Aruba for 10 nights and just returned last week. It was not an all-inclusive. They go to Aruba regularly and said they had a great time. Casino had mask requirements and closed at 11pm. They had little Covid, but it has spiked some since opening borders. Social distancing was not a problem now, but it could be different by the holidays.

More like the murder and crime rate and knowing what the communities are like.

The many other reasons are not permitted on here.

Hi

Thanks again for all the great suggestions. I am thinking of Aruba as well. I also go there all the time. I just have to look up some all inclusive resorts. Although I have a very favorite restaurant there I would have to leave one day to go to..........lol

Oe thing thou I live in Ft.Lauderdale and our postivity rate is not 13%. Broward (Port Everglades) is down to 4% something and the state is down to 5.6%. So anyone that wants come on down we are safe.

Have a wonderful safe day.

Kathy
