CNBC is reporting the official extension of the ban until October 31st:  https://www.cnbc.com/2020/09/30/cdc-extends-ban-on-cruising-through-october-.html

Executives of the cruise companies and CLIA are planning a meeting at the White House on Friday, CNBC’s Seema Mody reported.

And it is now official on the CDC site.

Yes, I am.  Our procedures and protocols are in a controlled document, so I can't share them, but they include what and where shoreside personnel can go on the ship, what they must do when boarding, how joining crew must quarantine for 14 days before returning to work, and then wear masks and quarantine as much away from the rest of the crew as possible (eating meals in their cabin), since they were then exposed to air travel, wearing masks when interacting with shorebased personnel, galley staff having to wear masks at all times during food prep and service, and on and on.  Plus, we get questionnaires from contractors who are coming to the ship explaining their company policies and asking for ours.

But then again, we are a crew of 20, not a thousand, and don't have a few thousand passengers to be responsible for.  And, our plan came out back in March, and while it does not have to be approved by the CDC, it does have to meet best practices for our class society as it is part of the ISM system.  Trust me, I work every day in a covid regulated industry.  Since we are considered essential workers, this is why we must have action plans.  For our little ship of 20 souls, the covid plan runs to 10-15 pages.

Given that, it is hard to even speculate how many pages the protocols would have to be for a ship with thousands and thousands aboard.

Related to this, though not directly relevant to Princess (not yet anyway), Carnival announced today the cancellation of all US cruises through the end of the year with the exception of some itineraries out of Port Canaveral and Miami. They posted a list of some ships with certain sailings cancelled well into 2021 and as far out as 2022. ☹️

From the new CDC order.....

"Recent outbreaks on cruise ships overseas provide current evidence that cruise ship travel continues to transmit and amplify the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19,—even when ships sail at reduced passenger capacities—and would likely spread the infection  into U.S. communities if passenger operations were to resume prematurely in the United States."

Can anyone tell me what "recent outbreaks on cruise ships overseas" they are referring to?  These are the scientists right?  They must know something and are not just making this up to justify their actions - right?

I don't disagree with extending the order, or even with making it month-to-month instead of Feb'21, but pointing to non-existent outbreaks weakens their credibility.

I was curious too so I googled recent outbreaks and other than the most recent TUI first positive then negative testing in Greece, I found this from early August when cruising first resumed:

Just for FYI since it is not in the CDC's wheelhouse but there has been an outbreak on a river cruises in Portugal since cruising resumed on some lines.

Thanks.  I'd already forgotten about those.  My mind was drawn to the recent MSC and Mein Schiff cruises which have thus far been quite successful.

The cruise industry will not get going again until a vaccine is available for general use.  The bad news is that the FDA is decided to slow walk the introduction of a vaccine.  It may be the Spring, even the Summer.

Where is the citation for this assertion?  These vaccines are being developed in record time.  The FDA has a stated procedure for approving any vaccine (see https://www.fda.gov/vaccines-blood-biologics/development-approval-process-cber/vaccine-product-approval-process).  Are you suggesting that they will not be following it once the companies submit their results?  If so, to whose benefit?
