Monday, first day out walking with the camera.

Some blue tongue lizards on the nature reserve. About 1ft long, not overly worried about me photographing them.

With family visiting this week, we drove down to the beach for the second time in a year and the contrast in the weather served to remind me of California's incredibly diverse climate. Fifty miles took us from 87° and sunshine to 62° and foggy. In the winter, is isn’t unusual to have a warm sunny day twenty miles from a snow storm. The 8,000 ft variance in altitude between those locations contributes a lot, but it’s still quite a contrast. The cool, foggy day was a welcome change from the heat that life in the Inland Valley usually offers through the end of November. The mist collecting on the palm fronds and falling in tiny rainstorms under each tree made me smile as I remembered growing up near that water collection farm on Tatooine. Wait...what?

I had two days to get out and shoot during this photo week - a day off on Friday, followed by the Saturday regular visit to the wetlands.  Friday started nice, with some lovely birds, but ended in heavy, biblical flooding rains, and then Saturday remained clear through past sunset.  Here are some of the lovely birds captured on those two days:

 

A female boat-tailed grackle posing atop a small tree:

 

The tiny but pretty eastern phoebe:

This lovely female painted bunting let me get a close enough shot to count the feathers:

 

A great blue heron flying past:

 

A red-shouldered hawk trying to be inconspicuous up in the pine trees:

 

An osprey, ever-vigilant and watching the waters below for a fish to dive down on:

 

Many birds like to roost together in one spot - this wetland is very popular with the ibises, who come streaming in around sunset from all over south Florida...just after sunset while leaving the wetlands, I liked seeing this park visitor standing in awe at all the ibis filling every tree - this is Florida's snow:
