Hotel suggestion for before and after our cruise out of Vancouver BC?

Recommended Posts

We just booked the 18 day Yukon and Triple Denali on Holland America for July 28th 2021.We would like to go a day early and stay a day after as not to be rushed to the airport.Which hotel would be best? By the airport or downtown? Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Any one that doesn't need a deposit or will give you a full refund as no one knows for sure if there will be cruises allowed in/out of Canada by July.

The Pan Pacific is right above the pier and you could walk anywhere in the downtown core.

I'd agree that a fully-refundable rate is definitely the way to go... considering that even the most optimistic dates being thrown out by our government for mass vaccinations across the population are last quarter of 2021, I'm personally 99% sure there will not be a Canadian cruise season in 2021 (and therefore no Alaska cruises, one-way or round trip).

Just in case though - or if you bump to 2022 which is looking very possible with multiple vaccines offering good results so far - you definitely want to stay downtown unless you plan to do no sightseeing whatsoever - the airport is not far, and especially for early or late flights a cab from any downtown hotel will be barely over half an hour. You could actually be faster taking a cab from downtown than waiting for an airport hotel shuttle bus! The only airport hotel actually attached to the terminal is the very pricey Fairmont, everything else you have a 10+ min drive plus wait time for the one bus.

If you're not fussy about fancy, definitely book the YWCA Hotel - great downtown location for restos, sightseeing etc. and probably cheaper than any airport hotel for a regular double room with a private bath (they don't have shared rooms, it's a real hotel not a hostel, though there are some semi-private 'Jack & Jill' rooms and hallway bath rooms for even lower prices).

If money is no concern, the Fairmont Pacific Rim is just along the street from the pier and one of only two 5* hotels in the city - with the Fairmont Waterfront right across the street from the pier and the already-mentioned Pan Pacific right above it both reliably getting 4* ratings.

Blue Horizon is an indy hotel in a tall tower - probably the best value 'view' rooms downtown - that gets a lot of love on these boards, and a couple of condo hotels (Times Square Suites, Rosedale on Robson) are long-term decently-reviewed spots with larger rooms, your own kitchen/laundry etc. in case that's a factor.

If you're a big family group, the YWCA and condo hotels become even better value - if you're a couple who only needs one room you could do a lot worse than seek a bargain on the bidding sites, as any downtown hotel at 4* or better will be a very safe, comfy choice with really no downside. A handful of the 2/3* spots are in nightclub-heavy areas where street noise can definitely be an issue, but all the 4* are outside the downtown party zone.
