Haines in the evening

RCI has changed the itinerary for the Serenade of the Seas so that instead of having a long day at Skagway, it will be a shorter day followed by docking for the evening at Haines.

What is there to do in Haines on an August evening? So far, RCI is offering only a tour to the American Bald Eagle Foundation and a sightseeing excursion that includes a canoe trip. This is in August.

Haines is a nice little town to walk around.  You can walk around Fort Seward for free and hopefully some of the local stores in the adjoining town will be open.  There is a surprisingly interesting Hammer Museum which may be open.  The Eagle Preserve Float Adventure would be a 4 hour tour so you may not have time for that.  You don't need a ship tour to see the American Bald Eagle Foundation, just walk over there and pay the entry fee.   If Steve Kroschel has his Kroschel Center for Orphaned Animals open for tours I think you would enjoy it but you need transportation to get there.  Steve's tours are very entertaining.  He will even let you kiss a moose.  Maybe RCi will come up with more options.  Go to the Haines Visitors site online for a map of the town and other things to do.   Daylight extends well into the evening in August.

You might look for options over at Trip Advisor. There are a couple of people that live in Haines that regularly answer questions like this.

We rarely eat off the ship but did spend the night in Haines a few years ago. Had a wonderful dinner at the Fireweed restaurant. The Bacon Wrapped Date was amazing.

The question is whether the American Bald Eagle Foundation will be open to the public in the evening, or only for the ship's tours. At the moment it is only open by appointment and no summer hours have been announced, but there's no hurry - I'm just starting to check out possibilities.
