Exchange between new CDC director and Alaska Senator.

I think the new CDC Director was not prepared for the questions and answered incorrectly, not having a full grasp of her agency's jurisdiction.

The DOT nor "others" have put a stop on cruises.  There is a congressional committed on transportation with oversight which has not issued any directives.

Then she better learn politics quickly and learn the phrase "I will get back to you on that".  She is going to be roasted in the press this week.

What I really started this thread for was to get some insider information.  It seems we have quite a few people who are familiar with maritime law and regulations.  I am wondering if there is any truth to her claims

For a year CDC has been setting the rules and saying "no sail" or "conditional" but has remained unprofessionally silent about updates or timelines. There has never been an indication any other authority has been involved. Time for politics to step aside. The cruise industry has bent over backwards installing safety standards, the supporting businesses have as well. All suffer. We would be far safer on a cruise ship than partying on land with hundreds, even thousands of others. The CDC needs to understand vaccinations are happening, air systems are good, medical systems are installed, that cruising is probably far safer than flying, riding on trains, or attending entertainment parks and venues. We are eager to hear the follow on, possible rebuttal, and actual forward action resulting from the comments between the CDC and Alaska senator.

Did you see this cruise critic article.

seems the CDC director was either clueless or lying

She went on to say that she believed the power rested partially with the Department of Transportation.

The DOT denies its involvement. In a statement, the department told Cruise Critic the following:

"The Department of Transportation does not regulate the cruise industry. Consumer complaints can be reported to the Federal Maritime Commission. Questions about vessel safety should be addressed to the U.S. Coast Guard, and crimes on cruise vessels in international waters are investigated by the FBI. "

More feckless "leadership" from the current administration. European and Caribbean cruises are being announced while USA and Canada bureaucrats drag their feet.

Perhaps but less "criminal amoral incompetent evil leadership" then the past administration .

(hope this is not too political)

When does the past administration get let behind and the present leadership step up and take responsibility for their actions. It's always easy to blame the other guy. This administration can set guide lines and open the cruise industry if it chose's to.

Very true . It's time to leave the Cuckoo's Nest and return to normal governing .
