Suez Canal is blocked by mega cargo ship Ever Given

Perhaps it's time for a sanity check on the size of ships, both cargo and passenger. 🤔

Yes this ship is evidence of being far too big.  Bigger tugs are arriving next week, then they may remove some of the cargo.  But where to store and keep containers?

It is being reported that the Ever Given has been freed and is floating.

Thank you.  That is great news.  Lovely to hear all the ship horns.  Last I read they said part was afloat then the tide went down.  I wonder if tugs will escort her out of the Suez Canal?

Thank you for News Networks link.  The ship is still stuck, but has moved.  It is very interesting to follow the efforts being undertaken by experts. I think it is going to be some time before people receive the contents of the containers.  I wonder if there is a limit on the number of rows of containers they can put on such a mega ship.

Attached is a video from YouTube posted by Alfie Smith who is senior second officer with Princess Cruises. He has given a very interesting account of what happened to Ever Given including the reasons his experience could have been the cause of the incident. One interesting point he makes is, this is not the first time that Ever Given has been in this situation;. Also, blocked the Hamburg Canal for a period.

Thank you very much.  I wonder if they learnt anything when they blocked the Hamburg Canal for a period.  Canal owners must be nervous when this ship passes through their canal.

This was the 'bingle' in Hamburg in Feb 2019

and this is the damaged harbour ferry that Ever Given 'nudged' . Ferry was at the wharf. Fortunately no passengers on ferry, crew of 3 only minor injuries and shock. Teaser-Bild

Just to clarify/correct - there is no such thing as a 'Hamburg Canal'. The ship had left the harbour and was traveling down the river (Elbe) towards the North Sea. Also, the Ever Given did not block the the river, it continued its journey with just a short stop a little down-river (probably for some investigators to embark)

The shipping on the river I believe was then stopped due to the high winds (which were thought to have caused the mishap)

Thanks for links.  Looks like ship refloated but still more work to be done.  Pleased to read livestock vessels will be given priority.  361 ships waiting.

I see Israel is going to contemplate a canal.

The America’s where going to do it in the 60s with a heap of nuclear bombs.
Don’t you just love that American can do attitude.

Apparently it’s something like $700,000 to use the Suez, Israel thinks they could half the price.

Lang Hancock had proposed using nuclear explosives to excavate a new port in the Pilbara. Somewhere south of Port Hedland.

The Americans thought it wonderful.  The Australians did not

Don’t worry the Chinese will be doing it free of charge.
