Jeans at dinner?

50, and yes I wear them at home, primarily on the weekend. But NOT when going out to what one might consider a "formal dining restaurant."

Oops, did I say that?

Seriously, for you Michigan folks who are old enough to remember the London Chop House in downtown Detroit, that is the absolute MINIMUM that I would expect to see on Formal Night on the ship.

I remember the days when jeans were specifically prohibited in the public schools dress code. The decline of civilization as we know it began when it suddenly became acceptable for students to dress like pigs and slobs. Once again, there's no one to blame but the parents. Just because the schools have become lax and permissive, does not mean that the parents have to buy into it.

I'd better stop NOW before this turns into next week's Dennis Miller Rant.

I remember the Chop House! Used to go there on extra special ocassions!

And, yes, I agree... while the 'kids' today might consider jeans as 'dressy' or WHATEVER, it is due to the decline of societal and parental standards.

While still at home, my folks would NEVER have let me out of the house/stateroom with jeans for a night out in a formal venue, no matter WHAT kind of shoes and top I was wearing. I don't care if you sparkle head to toe... I think that if you're in jeans, you are too casual for a formal venue.

Tom (tef), have you checked into the Michigan thread? We are meeting at Bahama Breezes in Troy probably on the 15th. Hope to see you there. You MAY wear jeans as the atmosphere is quite casual!

I'm well over 50 and wear jeans all the time at home. When I go out to eat I take them off and wear the proper attire for the venue where I plan to eat. Do I pack jeans for my cruise, yes if I plan on a horseback tour. I recently saw a Wheel of Fortune show where they had high schoolers in teams (6 per night) some boy-boy -some boy-girl some girl-girl, not a single one of them were wearing shorts or jeans. All the boys were wearing slacks or dockers and long sleeve button up dress or sport shirts (the show took place in Phoenix wear jeans are wore by most), just goes to show that when teens know what is expected of them they will comply. Many people say well I'm from Texas or Oklahoma and jeans are worn there in restaurants all the time. Well when your cruising you are not in Texas etc. As the old saying goes "when in Rome." If you want to wear shorts or jeans by all means do so just do so on the Lido deck.

I have to print a retraction.
I do, like jedgar, pack jeans when I am anticipating an excursion that requires I get on the back of a horse...which definitely falls into the 'When in Rome' category.
I don't feel this argument is about snobbery, I truly feel it is about respect.

My Dad in 74 and lives in jeans at home and to run around doing errands. However, when it is time to go out to eat (daily at 4:30PM), he changes to "dress" pants and shirt.

My ex-inlaws...LIVES in jeans and they are at or near 70! they have "dress jeans" and ones for everyday. So age has NOTHING to do with it, except that us older folk, KNOW what is proper and acceptable in situations!

BUT, I do remember the good ole days when you did not wear jeans (or slacks of any type for that matter) ANYWHERE but at home. You wore a dress/skirt to the Doctors, the movies, dinner out....whatever. It was not until I was in Jr. High that we were allowed to wear jeans at all, and that was only on Fridays. And this was in the late 60's. I am 47 and wear them every chance I can....even at work in a professional office enviroment with 30+ people!

BUT, to be able to dress up for special occasions is wonderful! On my first cruise in Jan. I LOVED the formal nights and even enjoyed changing into nice clothes for the other nights as well.

I agree with several of the posters about the "young people" today. My daughters (13 + 20)HATE getting dressed up. To tell the truth I fight them most of the time...but not always. Have to pick my battles. The ONLY way younger people will ever learn to have some class and well, self respect is to be taught, and being taught by example is still the best way!

I'm glad that my girls (19 & 16), although can look sloppy just like the rest of them, for the most part like being dressed up. My youngest daughter lives for spring to come so she can wear skirts to school...and she has to wait a long time. Spring comes late to Maine.

When I picked her up from school yesterday I noticed that about 3/4 of the girls were dressed REALLY nice...then there were the ones in typical high school garb...and of course the few that had that grunge/Goth thing going. Thank God there were just a couple. I think most public schools have some sort of dress code for the kids to follow which is good.

I must be very fortunate, my kids never question etiquette, although they have been known to TRY to bend my rules. icon_wink.gif

I'm just suggesting one thing. Its a book called "Don't sweat the small stuff". I've actually never even been on a cruise but i'll be taking my first in August!!! Everyone seems so uptight but really is it going to matter 20 years from now or 40 when your over the hill or whatever you all get what I mean???? My suggestion is to go get a hobby or something and stop worrying so much. YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE!!! Dont let jeans stress YOU out!!!! no so relax and have a good time

because jeans are not appropriate for a formal dining venue, that's why! 'nice' or not, jeans are jeans and do not match the lovely linens, china, silver, crystal, tux's, etc.

it's not about "sweating the small stuff" for many. it's about having the courtesy, decorum, etiquette, and respect to dress appropriately to the venue you are entering.

my table mates who showed up like bums ruined our last night's dining, not only by the way they looked, but by their tardiness and demeanor.

if you want to enjoy fine dining in the formal dining room, the least you can do is dress and act appropriately. if you want the food without the effort, there's always 'take out'.

Coming from an 18 year old. Yes jeans are something that i wear ALOT.. to a formal dinner?.. NO.. Going into the dinning room every nite gave me a chance to get a dressed up and i took advantage of that. It would not bother if others wanted to wear jeans, just as long as the people i am with are NOT. icon_razz.gif

I am 50 and so no to jeans in dining room. I wear jeans at home or to do errands everyday. DD is 25 and wouldn't be caught dead in dining room with jeans on. Her Dad lives in jeans and sweats and he would not even consider packing them. If you wnat to wear jeans be considerate enough to eat some where else besides the dining room.

What a subject! I will be wearing my black and brown jeans to dinner, because I own suits or jeans and only wear shorts on vacation. I am not going to bring all my suits just one for formal night so it comes down to shorts or jeans for nonformal nights and it sounds like everyone would pick jeans instead of shorts so jeans it is. I hope I don't mess up your evening.

Who said anything about bringing 'all' your suits for one formal night? How about 2 pairs of slacks to alternate, a couple of button down shirts, and a matching jacket and tie for formal night?

Surely, that wouldn't throw the packing list over the edge, if there is room for jeans in the suitcase!

It gets me a little upset when posters accuse us folk who follow guidelines uptight. We are not sweating the small stuff...believe me, I don't seat small stuff.

When any OP asks a question about attire, we are giving our opinion..we aren't sweating.

As for the jeans...the reason there are dress codes is because people act in different manners when wearing different clothing. If you watch peole at all, you'll even notice that when they walk, they tend to stand straighter in dressier clothes. And you not only carry yourself physically better when dressed nice, but most (and I repeat) MOST folks just behave more formally when formally dressed. This is what creates the atmosphere in the dining rooms...that and the white glove service you are getting.

Dressing down spoils the ambiance. You can defend the jeans or dressing down all you want, but you can't change that fact.

PS

As far as what folks have/don't have available to wear in their closets...I don't understand something.

Usually when planning a trip of any kind, I always figure on a few shopping trips before hand as part of the vacation expense..so in the case of someone having only jeans in their closet, I guess I just don't understand why picking up a few pairs of Dockers when one of the department stores has a great sale is just too difficult to do. They are far more comfortable and no more expensive than denim anyway.

hey eaglevh-

don't bring all of your suits, just bring the one you normally would with all of the accessory's. then, bring two extra shirts and you are set. make sure one of the shirts has a spread or point collar and you can wear it without a tie but with your suit coat. let the collar of your shirt hang out over your coat for a really cool gq look. the other shirt wear just with your suit pants one night and now you've got 3 different looks from just one suit. and all will be perfectly acceptable for the dining room.

have fun dude.

Over 50? Nope, I'm in my 30s. I own one pair of jeans to my name. Have had the same pair for 3 years because I rarely wear them. I would never consider wearing them to dinner at Applebees, much less to a nice restaurant or the dining room on a cruise ship. Not all young people insist on wearing jeans all the time.
