CDC

Responding to pressure from the industry and political stakeholders, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) may be open to lifting or modifying its Conditional Sailing Order (CSO) as soon as this summer, according to a Bloomberg report on Tuesday afternoon.

The report cites a CDC spokesperson that said the agency's "goal aligns with the desire to resume passenger operations in the United States expressed by many major cruise ship operators and travelers; hopefully, by mid-summer with restricted revenue sailings.”

It was unclear what will come next, but many in the industry expect the CDC to now issue new guidelines covering ship capacity restrictions, quarantine regulations and onboard protocols.

Of course the CDC is open to sailing by this summer.  All the cruise lines need to do is implement the requirements identified by the CDC.

There are two sticking points to opening.  Many areas are still on the middle of huge Covid numbers and travel outside the US as very limited.  The second is getting port agreements to accept all sick passengers is difficult to impossible.  For example ALASKA has about 160 ICU beds in the entire state according to Johns Hopkins database.  How many in Ketchikan?

The on board protocols are pretty straight forward.  Sure seems the cruiselines did and do want to avoid a repeat of last year's fiasco.

As long as passengers are vaccinated it is unlikely they will be filling up the ICUs.   If we do catch COVID after the vaccine, highly unlikely, we will only be mildly ill.   The problem with Celebrity is that they are allowing unvaccinated children and kids are getting very ill with COVID.   Seabourn is only allowing vaccinated passengers this summer.

Did I miss something,  where are kids getting very ill with COVID?

These articles are not relevant to the question you replied to. The "Young People" in all 3 of these articles are 18-49 year olds. There is no mention I can see of increased illness/hospitalization rates of children under 18.

I posted those to show how far down the age chain has moved (from 65+ to much younger people).  As far as specifics for young children, here are a couple recent articles. But in the final analysis, no way I am sailing with unvaxxed kids.

COVID once spared the young. Now more are being hospitalized

COVID-19 cases rising in children, health officials warn of more hospitalizations, MIS-C
