Strange question RE food in W Carib

Howdy all (Have I mentioned that I lurve the people on this board? So friendly and so helpful. I think I am sold on Carnival before I even set food on a ship!!!)

Anyway.......My dad has a very sensitive stomach. No garlic, no onions, no 'heat' (no flavor if you ask me). We are cruising with them to W Carib and will spend one day at Chankanaab Park and one day at Xcaret. He is fine with things like baked fish or chicken or 'Subway' sort of deli sandwiches. He also stays away from fried stuff.

I'm hoping he won't have too much trouble finding something to eat. I have no worries about on the ship. I just hope we can find him some nice baked fish and steamed veggies while on land.

Also, here is the 'dumb' question of the day. I have been to China twice and each time we were told not to eat the salads or drink drinks with icecubes. Granted, China is not the W Carib. Have any of you had problems with salads (In China, some of them are rinsed off with nonpotable tap water) or ice cubes?

Thanks for the help.

I think I'd stay away from salads in Mexico.... Montezuma's revenge could ruin your trip!

That is what I have heard, stay away from salads, ice cubes, etc in Mexico. I have never had a problem though. I have also heard that if you are in a tourist area, they use filtered water, but that's a big chance to take when you are on vacation.

Don't take any chances - it might ruin the rest of your trip. What you can do "in case" is order room service and pack a couple of bland sandwitches, and bring a bottle of water with you. I never really worried about this because we just ate pizza when we got back onto the ship, but unless it's already canned or bottled, you might not want to try it. I did something stupid in Morocco and ate a salad - I didn't even think about it - we were all careful with the water and stuff like that, but sometimes you forget about salad, and ice cubes and afterwards, you think, DUH! By the way, I didn't get sick from the salad - I was lucky.

Very helpful information... I thought that was all in the past but I guess it is still true.

People are always talking about getting mixed drinks at bars in Mexico...doesn't that pose a risk too? Margaritas are made with crushed ice right?

When we were in Coz DW ordered a coke with ice even though we were told not to. She just didn't think about it and didn't until she was crunching on the cubes.....fortunatly there was no problems but had we thought about it we would not have gotten her the ice. I bypassed the problem by having a XX malt soda

We always eat on the ship. We are cheap.

I too have a sensitive stomach. I rarely go out to eat here at home anymore. I can eat my food with tons of seasonings at home. I think it is the stuff/oil they cook it in.

Take some snacks in your backpack then eat when you get back to the ship.

Maybe your dad should get some meds before the cruise? If his tummy's that bad, he's probably already taking something like Prilosec or Zantac.

I have spent a lot of time in Mexico and Central America. I KNOW alcohol kills the germs in the ice. And since alcohol is the cheapest ingredient in any drinks down there, they certainly don't skimp on it.....

If you are worried about the water or the ice, just ask if it is purified. They will tell you. Most of the tourist places are. It is the places off the beaten track that you have to be a little careful of. I lived in Mexico for a while and did everything I was not suppose to do, eat off the streets, brush with tap water, etc, and I was never sick. If you ask, the Mexicans are VERY friendly and are sure to help. They love us, or is that our money? Have a wonderful time. And don't let fear make you miss out on some of the best food on the planet. There are many typical mexican dishes that are not spicey at all as well. Enjoy.

The mighty Valor awaits, let the PARTY begin.

I arm myself with strong antibiotics from my doctor before traveling to the region; whether cruising or land travel. Once while visiting Margarita Island, off the coast of Venezuela, my friend got violently ill. Ever since then I travel with meds. If I start to feel ill, I down the antibiotics. I rather be safe than sorry. My doctor travels often and is very understanding.
