Rare Saint Greg Posted May 23, 2021 #254 Share Posted May 23, 2021 (edited) Wasn’t this supposed to be a 3 hour tour? Maybe they ended up shipwrecked on the wrong island… without WiFi! Edited May 23, 2021 by Saint Greg 2
Rare MeganGC1983 Posted May 23, 2021 Author #255 Share Posted May 23, 2021 Ok just got back… let’s start from the beginning, William picked us up and then 5 others from the Majestic and we went to the port. Ultamar ferries also run from there.
Rare MeganGC1983 Posted May 23, 2021 Author #256 Share Posted May 23, 2021 We get Isla Mujeres and dock through the lagoon on the west side of the island. Lots of gorgeous real estate and yachts and church’s and jelly fish in the water.
Rare MeganGC1983 Posted May 23, 2021 Author #257 Share Posted May 23, 2021 We meet our driver, Luis. He’s originally from Mexico City. Moved here with his wife 10 years ago. Isla is a lot smaller population than Mexico City and less crime. He likes that. He’s very personable. First stop, the rough side of the island. It’s the east side. The island is only 500 meter wide at most points.

Rare MeganGC1983 Posted May 23, 2021 Author #259 Share Posted May 23, 2021 We walked around for a bit, then bought some beads, then took the picture with the Isla sign. Then off to the northeast side. A calmer area. Luis’ favorite area. We swam here for about 30 minutes and played with fish.
Rare MeganGC1983 Posted May 23, 2021 Author #260 Share Posted May 23, 2021 Then the beach highlight of the whole trip… playa Norte. Gorgeous, clean water. Lots of beach bars including my favorite with the beach swing. We had margaritas and swam for over an hour.
Rare MeganGC1983 Posted May 23, 2021 Author #261 Share Posted May 23, 2021 After beautiful Playa Norte… we headed deeper into the island. We stopped at a road side grill for some pork chops with salsa and beer. Luis tells us all about the upcoming mayoral race that’s on June 6th. They are really trying to change their corrupt govt.
Rare MeganGC1983 Posted May 23, 2021 Author #262 Share Posted May 23, 2021 After the wonderful street meat, we headed to the local brewery. They brew 6 local beers… 4 are pale ale IPA types, one is a Jamaican hibiscus (my favorite) and a darker vanilla and chocolate choice.

Rare MeganGC1983 Posted May 24, 2021 Author #265 Share Posted May 24, 2021 After Isla Brewery, we went to the Turtle Farm. Here they take in, rehab and hatch all kinds of turtles, all colors: white, green, and black and we could feed them all. Also, I found several iguanas. 😍
Rare MeganGC1983 Posted May 24, 2021 Author #266 Share Posted May 24, 2021 We had a very old fisherman as our tour guide here. He thought he was very good at English. He was not. We could understand very little of what he said. 2

Rare MeganGC1983 Posted May 24, 2021 Author #269 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Outside there’s 2 tanks where the turtles are close to being released. One had a few 20ish year turtles. The other had the big boys… one had over a 3 foot long shell. They were 60 years. There was also a manta ray in that tank.
Rare MeganGC1983 Posted May 24, 2021 Author #270 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Then there’s more turtle tanks and you can feed them. Our Fisher guide let us hold them. IMG_8729.mov
Rare MeganGC1983 Posted May 24, 2021 Author #271 Share Posted May 24, 2021 Then it was lunch time and Luis took us to la palapa del capitan. Two thumps up. So good! Great guacamole. Wonderful margaritas. Shrimp and fish tacos fajitas style with an aioli. We will go back here. More bar swings and some crazy visitors here from Staten Island to get venires put in.

Rare MeganGC1983 Posted May 24, 2021 Author #274 Share Posted May 24, 2021 After lunch, we hit the road, headed to the furthest point south on the Isla…. Punta Sur. There are road side vendors everywhere, and husband has a love for tajin. So he had to have a tajin papaya. Once we got to Punta Sur, I had to have a churro. Iguanas and churros are priorities for me in Mexico.
