Princess originally only used number of cruises (cruise points) as the criteria for moving up the Captain's Club categories. Realizing that was not far to cruisers who book a lessor number of cruises, but longer ones, they came up with the dual criteria as the best way to be fair to all. I do not remember seeing anyone saying they were upset with reaching their level by either method. The only complaints I have seen are by people saying the way other people reached their level was unfair. 5

Glad I've never been on a cruise of that type. Of course a 3 day cruise sounds crazy to me in the first place.

Hubby with his coffees and bottled water covers that before touching a single drop of booze. I’m not sure where I found the breakdown of cost per PLUS perk, since it had to be in 2019 when it all started, but I remember noting that unless you’re only drinking tap water, juice, iced tea and the swill they pass off as non-speciality coffee, you’re going to get your money’s worth. When I look at the plus up it is $50 a day without subtracting the gratuity bonus.

Possibly if you find a friend to cruise with and share a cabin, your cost will go down considerably.I have several single friends that cruise and I know their cost is so high, doesn't seem fair.I also agree that paying for two(when you are one) should bring you a perk. We are very fortunate and are able to book longer cruises. Hope when Princess decides to change their Elite qualifier rules, they grandfather those that worked hard to get there and don't take anything away, no matter how they reached Elite.Time will tell. The rumors have been flying around for at least a couple of years that a change is coming. The reason for paying double is simple economics base due to the limiting factor for revenue on most cruises is cabins. Combine that with the revenue model for most mainstream cruise lines where they get 75% of their revenue from fares and 25% from onboard sales (according to 10Q and 10K filings). That means that even with double rates the the average revenue that the cruise line gets from a single passenger is 2X + .33X =2.33 X where X is the fare. For a cabin with 2 people in it the revenue is 2X + .66X = 2.66X. So even with the double rates the cruise lines loses revenue whenever a cabin is filled with 1 person instead of 2. Basically that is a 12.5% reduction in revenue for a solo cabin. Edited June 28, 2021 by nocl

From what I remember, after you take out gratuities Princess Plus was adding about $25 per day. That's two drinks for me since the drinks I get tend to run around $11.50 each with the gratuity added. In addition can have an occasional beer with lunch and I get multiple coffees (love that Vanilla Latte), San Pellegrino before bed, bottled water anytime I like, juice, soda, etc. For us it's truly a no-brainer. We never cancel or reduce the gratuities. We love our specialty coffees and my wife loves a beer by the pool and a Lemon Drop in the evening and sometimes a Grand Marnier before bed. We like to sit in Vines in the evening, watch the people go by, have a glass of wine and maybe some sushi or whatever is the nosh of the day (included with the wine for "free"), etc. Even without any alcohol we would at least break even and likely come out ahead. We never paid for the "regular" alcohol package. It was simply too expensive to be worth it to us. We got it sometimes as a perk and it was great. With Princess Plus available we will definitely take advantage of the offer. The always-on Internet doesn't factor into it for us but ends up as a nice extra. We would never pay for it - we do get free Internet minutes - but will gladly take the perk.

Every time I looked it was an extra US$40/pp/day which nets to around US$25/pp/day when you remove the crew incentive(gratuity).

The way I read your first sentence was to infer that number of cruises would be the one method going forward. Now, I think you were saying the number of cruises as a measure should be the option to be dropped by PCL. Sorry for the confusion - I'm in complete agreement with you.

Turk1 Posted June 28, 2021 #293 Share Posted June 28, 2021 So, 1 point for each cruise, another point for each day of the cruise and then points based on the level of cabin you book. 3 day cruise in Inside cabin would be something like 1+3+1=5 points. generichandle Posted June 28, 2021 #297 Share Posted June 28, 2021 We are Elite and get all the perks that come with that, and it's great. But we never get free upgrades or move-over's offered. You know why? The two biggest money makers for the cruise line are the casino and the drinks. We neither of us gamble, and we do not drink [alcohol, obviously]. Did you think they do not know what to do with this info, which they certainly gather? So; No upgrades or move-overs for us. I am not complaining! Love the perks of Elite But i do not blame PCL for looking after their big spender. It is, after all, a business. We live happily with that.

I would consider a free inside or balcony cruise to be an upgrade of sorts. It's an upgrade from the status of having no cruise or having to pay for a cruise.
