BBC 4, starting this Monday, June 21st at 7.30 pm.

Called simply " The Cruise", it's the series about the Celebrity ship which introduced us to the on board singer, Jane McDonald, an unknown Wakefield lass.

A series of 12 programmes.

Watched this last night and vaguely remember it first time around.

Having done a couple of Celebrity trips it was interesting to see the differences between then and now.  No freedom dining, a Captain's table with invited guests.

I understand the ship is now Marella Explorer.  The social host, Amanda Reid, was still doing her thing on QM2 in 2018 in post as the Entertainment Director.

Oh, thank you for this- I wondered what had happened to the ship...

and also Amanda Reid... she said she was a dancer on QE2 for years... so she's returned to Cunard. Very interesting. x

Must look it out on catch up.  We did not see it when on originally, about how long ago was that?

The series was in 1998.

I am wrong about the launch date- the maiden voyage shown was in 1996- they celebrate the New Year of 1997 in Wednesday's show.

Thank you.  Just watched the first two episodes.  Not much different to some ships today.  We have not travelled on a Celebrity ship, but I am surprised it is not a calmer atmosphere as I had got the Impression Celebrity was a more upmarket cruise line.  Not so sure I can see how they will stretch it to twelve episodes though.

Good to see this, as it's about the same time we started cruising.  Another change we remember as well as the formal nights and fixed dining times was being offered a choice of a smoking or non-smoking table allocation in the restaurant!

Galaxy was launched in 1996 (and we sailed with her in 2001 to the Baltic) and sold to the new cruise line TUI in 2009 to become the wonderfully named "Mein Schiff".  She was transferred within the TUI Group to Marella (ex-Thomson) in 2018 and renamed "Explorer".  We were lucky enough to fit in a Canaries cruise on board just before lockdown in February last year, and she still looked very smart.

We can also remember Amanda Reid during her Cunard days, probably around 2013.  One other thing struck us, particularly in the first show, was that how nervous Jane Mc Donald was compared to the perpetual extrovert of her later shows.

Watching again now.  When we first watched we had never been on a cruise and felt it was for older people just like those in the series.   We are now those older people.

Thoughts after the first three.

The ships size is just my sort of size.

The bar waiter being paid for each drink he sells while clearly a "nice" person would just annoy me eventually by trying to sell me things!

Jane hasn't changed, although knowing the outcome of the romance does make it a bit sad.

Just what did Amanda Reid actually do for a living?

The DJ was just someone to avoid.

The lady who was only interested in getting a refund seemed to spoil her holiday by carping on about it instead of getting on with her holiday.  Oh and the bear would have disappeared for a swim.

Enoying it really.

Watched them all again.  It was a really good series.  Some really nice people like the casino couple and some who appeared dreadful the gambler in particular although he may have been playing for the cameras.

I see they are now repeating return to the cruise.

I had no idea they were doing the return... I've found some repeats at 2.30am and booked the rest- thanks for that!

Watched the first couple of the return.  IMHO its pants compared to the original.  Annoying voiceover, mostly a repeat of the first series with a few "new" intereviews.
