Eastbound Transatlantic, Fly back to Newark?

Recommended Posts

Spring 2022 NCL Transatlantic from Manhattan.  Flying back to Newark.  Does it make sense to park car at remote Newark airport parking and find transport to Manhattan cruise pier from the airport?  If so, what transport is there to from Newark airport to Manhattan cruise terminal?

Flying from London to Newark.

Thank you in advance for any guidance.

Yes, there are multiple transportation options from Newark Airport and vicinity into midtown Manhattan, but the "best" option depends on the specific parking lot location chosen.

Economy Parking Lot P6 is fairly conveniently located to one option. Park as close as possible to the lot's main entrance and exit off of Brewster Road. From that main entrance and exit it is a 4-minute walk to the bus stop. Walk out of the parking lot through that main entrance and exit, turn left on Brewster Road. Cross the signalized intersection with the road leading to the airport exit. On the other side of the intersection, on Brewster Road, is a bus stop shelter for routes 28 and 37, and a very short path leading to a bus stop shelter on Port Street for routes 40 and 107. New Jersey Transit route 107 operates express to Manhattan, 25 minutes travel time, hourly on weekdays, half-hourly on weekends. Find schedules here: http://www.njtransit.com/bus-to Fare is $6.00 per person, exact fare required. (When boarding, make certain that the bus is destined for Manhattan, and not in the opposite direction towards Ivy Hill or South Orange.)

Newark Airport Long Term Parking, on Frelinghuysen Avenue, just south of U.S. Highway 22, has very convenient bus service to Manhattan immediately outside the lot on Frelinghuysen Avenue. It is the same New Jersey Transit route 107 service, described above, but with a few additional minutes of travel time (it is a slightly longer ride). A strong contender for your proposed plan.

Jiffy Newark airport parking is immediately adjacent to the New Jersey Transit commuter railroad station for Newark Airport. Generally, there are three trains per hour, with 30 minutes travel time into Manhattan; fare is $15.25 per person. The problem is that there is a fence between the parking lot and the station, and vehicle access to the station is limited. You might ask Jiffy if it is authorized to take its customers into the station area, but my suspicion is that the answer will be "no." In that case, you would have to take the parking lot's shuttle service from the lot into the airport, then take a monorail rain from the airport back to the very same location . . . but on the other side of the fence. Once on the other side of the fence you can then ride the New Jersey Transit train into Manhattan. (Alternatively, from the airport itself Coach USA operates an express bus service into Manhattan, every 45 minutes, for a $17.00 fare per person.)

ABC Airport Parking, south of the airport on North Avenue, is a small facility with very convenient bus service to Manhattan. Directly across the street from the parking lot the New Jersey Transit route 112 express bus to Manhattan. Every hour, the trip takes about 30 minutes. Fare is $7.00 per person, exact fare not required (drivers make change). Find schedules here: http://www.njtransit.com/bus-to

Finally, are you certain that your vessel will actually be departing from Manhattan? Cunard Line, which provides most transatlantic crossings, departs from Brooklyn. To get from Manhattan to Brooklyn requires a subway ride into downtown Brooklyn, then a short bus ride to the cruise terminal in Brooklyn.

In April 2022 NCL has 5 transatlantic crossings departing Manhattan, while Cunard has none before May and only two in May, so mathematically it's more likely that the poster is on NCL than Cunard.

Thanks for the detailed responses.  We are cruising on NCL. We're an older couple and may have difficulty with luggage on buses.  I will take the bus suggestions into account.  Other suggestions?

AirTrain monorail from any EWR terminal to NJ Transit Newark Airport station, followed by NJ Transit train to NY Penn Station and then taxi or Uber to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.

We are doing the NCL Epic TA in April 2022 NY to Barcelona.  Planning on taking a train from New Brunswick NJ to Manhattan (hopefully running on a Sunday morning) then Uber to port.  Coming back Uber all the way back home.  Never thought of driving to EWR and leaving car there.  That would be very expensive I would presume.

My error . . . overlooked that "NCL" was specifically mentioned! The "usual" case for a transatlantic cruise is Cunard Line, which NCL only does cruises . . . but here again, no use of the term "transatlatic crossing"! Careless reading on my part!

The fundamental problem with traveling by train is that the station at Newark Airport is not directly accessible, and that you will end up having to handle your baggage personally between the PANYNJ monorail train and the New Jersey Transit train at the Newark Airport station. While the monorail train does operate from some of the on-airport long-term lots, if you park at any other lot then you would also need to travel by bus just to get to the monorail train. By train, there are high level platforms, so there's no carrying baggage up into the train, or down from, but you would need to shuffle your baggage in the train aisle, and then lift up your baggage to place it on the luggage racks over the seats (if off-peak you might be lucky and able to keep it on the floor in front of an adjacent seat). If you go by train into Manhattan, there are red caps as well at Pennsylvania Station, but they're all employed by Amtrak and it could prove difficult getting a red cap to assist from an inbound New Jersey Transit train. The advantage of travel by bus is that the bus travels direct to Manhattan, without the need to transfer or handle baggage (as well as the fare being much more reasonable). Once arrived in Manhattan, at Port Authority Bus Terminal, you can call for a red cap to assist with moving the baggage from the bus platform to a taxi.

Ordinarily I would be inclined to use the Newark Airport Long Term Parking, on Frelinghuysen Avenue, and travel direct on the New Jersey Transit route 107 bus into Manhattan. But I believe that the route 107 is using standard transit buses, for which you might be troubled in bringing baggage on board. On the other hand, by using the ABC Airport Parking, on North Avenue, the New Jersey Transit route 112 bus generally uses over-the-road buses for which you could more easily place your baggage into the underfloor luggage bays, without ever having to take your baggage "on" the bus itself. (Maybe one of the ABC people could assist in walking you and baggage across the street--since you would not be using their shuttle bus to the airport--and assist in boarding the route 112 bus?). Perhaps some regular New Jersey Transit riders here can confirm the equipment type on these two bus routes?

Does East Brunswick permit multi-day parking at either Neilson Plaza or the Transportation Center? If so, park there and Coach USA (Suburban Transit) direct to Port Authority. Less expensive all around than trying to park at EWR!

I don’t think that poster was considering parking at the airport, being in central NJ, train from New Brunswick to penn station is easy.

There are parking garages located in Hamilton NJ & Iselin NJ adjacent to NJ Transit train stations. If your cruise travel days do not exceed the maximum days allowed in the garage (I believe it is 21 days in Iselin), you could park at either of these stations and use NJ Transit to NY Penn Station, then taxi to Manhattan cruise terminal.

Not sure where Denver, PA is, but would car service from home to port and back from airport be an option?  Pricey, yes - but how much more than parking the car somewhere for over two weeks and paying for ground transfer from there to Manhattan pier ?  Especially considering difficulty handling luggage, it might be worth it.

I live in East Brunswick and wish the buses ran on the weekend.  It would be no brainers. unfortunately as of today they are not.  Maybe by April they will

You could also consider a "Park, Stay and Fly" package at one of the  hotels near EWR - I have found these to often be cheaper than economy parking. It has been a while but we stayed at the Wyndham at EWR and at the time they offered 14 day "free" parking, generally you can choose your hotel night stay at the beginning or end of your trip.

Hamilton is a good choice.  The station is off of US 1 a little above Trenton.  The train fare on NJT will be about the same as if you went from the airport, cheap senior fares too.  One person can wait with the bags by the escalators while the other parks the car.  Currently $12 per day?

An Uber or Lyft is easy to catch at NY Penn Station, and it's a fairly quick ride to the cruise terminal.  Just make sure they go all the way past the terminal (going north) and then u-turn in so they can drop you at the door.
