Best small luxury cruise for Australia/New Zealand

Recommended Posts

Looking for recommendations from fellow cruisers!  We would prefer a ship that would have a maximum of 650 passengers.  Have looked at a couple of ships,

Oceania regatta, Silverseas Muse, Whisper, Shadow, Seabourn Sojourn, Odyssey and Regents of the sea Mariner.  Anyone do this itinerary on any of these ships?

Thanks, Jean

I think you would have to decide the itinerary first. That would be my decision.

there’s coastal Australia,  New Zealand,  Pacific Islands
There’s some some that do the top end of Australia.

All the cruise lines do pretty much the same itineraries around NZ with some variation in the minor ports, ditto for Australian coastal cruises. Look at the itineraries and do your research on what you want to see where, and pick the one that suits you best.

Just want to add we cruised with Silver Seas on Shadow from Vancouver to Tokyo via Alaska and it’s a beautiful ship. Very intimate service, got waited on hand and foot - even at the buffet, staff very quick to lend a hand, seat you etc.  Cabins all lovely, worth a look if you are interested.

How lovely to think of small ship cruising sadly it seems a long wait before it will  become a reality.

All the lines mentioned have merit but what will their product and experiences look like once we are post pandemic?

Nice to dream though.

My son, Mr Chimu has a lot of itineraries to the Antarctic, Arctic, NZ Antarctic Penninsula, but he doubts there will be much activity before April 2022, by then the season will be over anyway.  It is awkward when you have to bring over the expedition ships from places like Russia, the ships owners want some big money up front, therein lies the problem.

Those cruises look appealing.

Be lovely to step aboard and leave the dramas behind.

Was reading on the river cruising thread about someone who had just done a Uniworld cruise with some land in Italy, 55 on board.

Sounded delightful albeit with covid rules and 3 tests.

All not possible for Australians at present.

Although have spoken with someone who has travelled to Canada for 5-6 months, after several attempts to get permission to leave the country, fully vaccinated.

Hope is still there it seems.

Whilst no cruising for the foreseeable future we were on Silver Muse over Christmas 2019. She is a beautiful ship and we enjoyed not having a main dining room as such but 2 separate areas with quite different menus, as well as a number of other included areas (the outside grill at night and the buffet which became an Italian). Enjoyed the specialty restaurants as. well. We were booked again for last year but of course that went out the window. 😪

We've just booked an Antarctic cruise from Dunedin for January 2022, doubt it will go ahead, but hanging on by a thread that it may. Agree that if the cruise companies dont get some agreement that a season is possible soon, then it is highly likely that they will take their ships elsewhere. Our only reason we booked was on the chance that if it is cancelled they may do another Ross sea in 2023, then we may be given the opportunity to move our booking. Time will tell.
