South Georgia Island to Buenos Aires

We are considering an Antarctic Cruise from Ushuaia to the Antarctic and then on to South Georgia and then to Buenos Aires on a new 260 passenger, 23,000 gt polar rated ship.  We know about the seas in the Drake Passage.  But what can we expect as far as the seas around the South Georgia islands, the Falklands and then on to Buenos Aires?

Most of the southern ocean can be rough, so to and from South Georgia could potentially be pretty rough. But again, like the Drake, it could also be calm. Once you start heading north for BA, the trend is a lot calmer.

 

Also, if you're sailing north from the Falklands towards Buenos Aires, watch the horizon at night for the kind of glow you'd get from city lights. North of the Falklands along the continental shelf is a prime fishing location for the massive squid fleet. They use extremely powerful lights to attract the squid, and we were able to see them glowing in the distance from hundreds of miles away! It was truly eerie to see glowing lights in the middle of the ocean knowing there was no land around!

We did this from Uruguay and it took 4 of the craziest, roughest sea days I have ever experienced to get to Antarctica. This was in November and I was truly scared. Getting back from the Drake was not pleasant, but nothing like the 4 days in a washing machine. I was always concerned about the Drake, but did not know getting to S. Georgia would be such a nightmare. At least now you will be prepared 😉 LOL!

Also did Montevido - Falkland Islands - South Georgia and we had calm sea all the way 

 

so it really depends but the stretch to South Georgia can also be rough at times - but it helps to be prepared for it just in case so it’s not That big of a surprise
