I have no idea how they knew, and it's been a few years, but I do remember at least one comment on the price we paid. Think it was at check in.

Wow, we’ve never had any comments like this.  I would be unpleasantly surprised if we did.  I don’t think it’s appropriate.

Neither have I and I negotiated an upsell to a PS once.  No one said a word or seemed to know anything.  No matter what we paid, we paid and it’s no one’s business.  One’s person’s good price is too much for others and what is too much for some is a good price for others 😉

We were in a casino cabin interior for free, and received upsell to a Vista Suite for our Koningsdam Oct 10th Pacific Coast 7 day cruise. I ended up taking it. It will be nice to be able to sit on veranda. Just received an email saying Santa Barbara is out, but I think we've know that for a couple of weeks now. Staying an extra night I'm San Fran.

Good to hear the upsells are coming.....

We are 3 stars and when I make the reservation I add "open to upsells" and I've emailed the TA and get told she will forward them to me if she gets them.....And we have never, ever gotten one....

Our cruise departs 10/20 (Rotterdam TA) and if there is ever a time an upsell would be swimming around for me to catch it has to be now......We shall see.

I plan to email the TA weekly until cruise time....Any other suggestions on how to get the attention of the "upsell" gods?

No one knows exactly how the upsell fairy works but there has to be availability to get an upsell offer 😉

Is your TA with a Big Box store?  If they are they might not be interested spending time on upsell offers.  I dealt with a big box outfit years ago and while they said they would I quickly learned they wouldn’t.

Some TA’s are more proactive than others about upsell offers especially if they know that you are prone to accept them.  I don’t know if emailing her weekly will get the attention of the upsell fairy.  I would be watching the availability for cabins in the higher categories (remember guarantees can take those cabins so availability can be misleading) and about 3 weeks out start emailing with a friendly email about being excited for the cruise and wondering if they have heard of any upsell offers coming yet.

If your TA knows you are interested in an upsell offer, there is no need to bug them over and over assuming they are interested in helping you get one.  At least, that’s my experience and I’ve had a number of upsell offers.

We got ours from our HAL PCC so their clients might get them first.

No they don’t.  I use a TA and our upsell offers are as fast (and sometimes faster as those that book directly with HAL / PCC.

Good info as usual Kazu.....

It's a big box TA.....I do have good communications with her and she knows I'm interested.....I think she may say "we will send them on to you" but they really do not plan to fool with it.

The TA Rotterdam cruise should have plenty of open cabins.....It has not been actively sold in months and with the recent unpleasanteness with travel restrictions in the Netherlands, many have jumped ship....So thinking if there ever was a time for an upgrade fairy visit, this would be it.

But not complaining....love our cabin choice and we are grateful to be able to hopefully board a 'dam ship....especially this one....on her maiden voyage......LOL...but a deal on an upsell would be nice!

I have heard from many others who use a big box TA that they GENERALLY do not pass on upsell offers.  Its just too much time and effort for them I guess and I fully understand why they do this.  However, since we often get and accept upsells, I refuse to book with them.

My SIL who is sailing with us in an interior room was offered an upsell to a Verandah for $109/person based on double occupancy. If her DH had been able to go with her they would have jumped on that. It was one of the gifted rooms we were able to snag under the Buy One Gift One promotion.

Agree.

Ironically my TA works for one the top firms booking and always remembers me when it comes to upsells. But, it’s not a big box store.   I don’t expect any for the next cruises I have booked since the categories are fully booked currently.   Now, were that to change, I know I would get a call. 😉

I’ll happily take her OBC and good service.  😄

That upsell seems like a very good price.  I would have been all over that.

Has anyone gotten an upsell offer when booking a casino room. I got a free inside cabin but was not interested in upgrading at the time to a balcony. I wasn't interested in giving them any more money with covid still leaving things questionable and the cost to move up at that point was not a really good deal.

Yes, I am in the same situation.  Would love an offer for an upsell now that we are only 1 month out from sailing.  At the time we booked, the price to upgrade seemed pretty high, and like you, I was not willing to have more of our money out there when we weren't even sure the ship would sail.

Also, another related question...has anyone ever declined an upsell and then received a complimentary upgrade after that?

Not me, but the cabin category I want for an upsell has lots of takers so there aren’t usually any left vacant after the upsell rounds.

I have refused an upsell as the price wasn’t good enough and then seen them come back with another round at a lower pice if there are no takers, though 😉

I also negotiated one upsell offer once through my TA.  I told her why it wasn’t a good deal and she agreed, discussed with me and went back to HAL with a counter offer.  HAL was close enough to my price on their counter that my TA and I both agreed it was fair and I took it.

My TA is with a big box agency, but she has always been very customer oriented.  I usually put  in a plan around upsell time where I give her a certain price and tell her just to book something if an upsell comes through.  That way  she doesn't have to reach me.  In fact, I think I will email her now.  I am in an inside cabin, and I don't need an outside, but if I could get a balcony, I would grab it for a decent price.

Pre-Covid, everytime I was offered an upsell either I or someone else took it before the free upgrades began.  HAL has gotten smart with how they do this and I am sure it is now an important part of the revenue process.  This is why I avoid booking guarantees (unless it is for a Neptune).

Good example - on our last cruise I booked a Signature suite and was offered an upsell to a Neptune for $200 pp, which I uickly accepted.  I was able to pick my cabin and selected one right by the Neptune Lounge.  I friend of mine on the cruise booked a Neptune guarantee and when he got his assignment it was for a cabin one deck below the Lounge (and he paid over $1000 pp more than I did for the Signature).  He was not happy when he saw my location and total price paid.

Now, having said all that, this is for the higher rated cabins.  For the lower ones, such as Insides and Ocean views, I think that free upgrades are still a good possibility.  So, my answer to your question is "it depends".

Update....

For the first time ever, the big box TA sent us an email yesterday with upsell opportunities for our cruise that sails in 25 days!

The prices were "way too high" IMO.  We are in a VF (balcony) and the upgrade price to Neptune $1849, Sig Suite $1199, Vista Suite $499 per person/14 day Rotterdam TA.....

.....hoping the upsell email makes another round or two!

Seems a bit high to me as well, even though it is for 2 weeks.  I assume that those prices were per person??

I would expect to see another round or two of upsells based on this.  I have experienced same thing with HAL on 4-5 weeks out upsell offers.

I use the big box TA.  I have never had an up sell offer from them or from HA.  I have read some people call the big box a couple of weeks prior to  sailing and inquire about upsells.  I have never tried that.  Can’t hurt to ask nicely.

I was always happy with the big box yet lately hold times to speak with an agent are very long..  over an hour.

Last year at the beginning of the pandemic wait times on hold with the big box TA were a lot longer than that.  We would be on hold (speaker phone on) for 3 or 4 hours.  Then be disconnected and on hold again the rest of the day, too.  It was awful!

Do upsells generally offer a choice of cabins? I took an upsell to a Neptune Suite a few years ago and I don't remember whether I had a choice. If we are offered an upsell from our Signature Suite to a NS on our next cruise I wouldn't take it if we didn't know which cabin we were getting.

Yes, there will be cabin numbers offered, so when you call have your ship deck plan pulled up on your computer so you can readily access the cabin locations.  When you call about an upsell they don't chit chat, it's short and sweet, so be ready with your credit card and the deck plan.
