For several years while living in So.Cal. my husband and I would spend a week at Big Bear Lake and attend the Octoberfest. Octoberfest at that time ran every weekend from the middle of Sept. through the end of Oct. and featured German musicians. The first Octoberfest we attended  while we were dancing a polka someone rained their beer down my back. A good thing I was not driving as I reeked.  My son had the good furtune to attend Octoberfest in Munich in1979.

@mamofami.. congratulations on your 62nd anniversary. What a blessing that you will be able to be with your hubby that day.

@Sharon in AZ.  Thanks for your warm welcome to the 10/10/21 cruise. I live in Mesa. Lets chat on the rooll call and set up a meeting.

I have no idea why my computer isn't showing the blue hilighting today.

Sandi, sorry it has taken so long to answer your  question.  First, a neighbor stopped by and talked for awhile.  After I finally finished answering you and clicked submit reply, it disappeared.  Just love those CC gremlins!  🤣

DH rented cars for 40 years when he traveled for work, so renting cars is second nature to him and he is comfortable driving strange cars in unknown places, and on either side of the road.

We were lucky to be able to start cruising early, and as tecknology advanced we could take longer cruises as DH could work just about any where.

While we don''t always rent cars, we try to rent them whenever we can.  We've found we can see more places in a day than on a tour as we usually don't want to stay at a as long as the tour does.  We usually don't eat off the ship, or if we want something, we get something quick to save time.  Renting cars also lets us stop if we see something interesting that was not on our orginal list.

Before GPS, we would look at the shore excusions and decide where we wanted to go.  Then, we'd get a map to help us get there, starting with the site the furthest from the ship, and work our way back to port.

With GPS, which we used as soon as it was available, and now cell phone maps, we are good to go.

@jimgev had some good suggestions.  As there are now more and bigger ships, we now reserve cars where ever possible, and in some ports we use the small local companies.

As a rule, we do not get the added insurance, but will if DH feels there could be a problem if we didn't.  This is usually, but not always, in small ports renting from local companies.

We learned the hard way when we could not rent a car in South Korea, to get an international drivers license.  Some countries require them.

All good points.  I wonder if I'll be able to put some of this knowledge to use in the future?🤞

I remember when one of the red pandas at the National Zoo in DC escaped and went on the lam -- the city had great fun enjoying his brief freedom!

I've got to say, and I hope I don't offend anyone, that the meal of the day sounds like a Hamburger Helper concoction!

Hurricanes (the drink!) always take me back to New Orleans.

Stay safe and stay well, everyone!

It is basically a home made hamburger helper concoction indeed.  Not my cup of tea but I know a lot of people enjoy it 😉

No offence at all.  🙂

Hope so.  It's a good way to see what you're interested in without seeing stuff tour operators think you should see, or getting stuck in a museum that can ge done in 30 minutes but the guide keeps you there 90 minutes.  Been there done that several times.

Good afternoon. Thanks for the Daily.

Good days. Red Pandas are cute. I love cheeseburgers. I will celebrate Oktoberfest. We have several German restaurants here. I have been to Germany several times but not during Oktoberfest.

The original Oktoberfest did start in October to celebrate the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria (1810), but now runs from mid-September until the first Sunday in October.

Funny Carlin quote.

I like the meal (but too carby), drink and wine. I still have my hurricane glass from NOLA.

I have been to today's port, on my Panama Canal cruise on the NCL Bliss.

It's another warm and muggy day here. I did manage to get the lawn mowed this morning before it got too hot. The St. Patrick's Day parade was downtown today, postponed from March due to Covid. It's usually one of the largest in the country.

@HAL4NOW Bon Voyage!

@mamaofami So nice that this rehab facility is so much nicer. Early Happy Anniversary!

@ger_77 Wow on frost already. I'm glad you had a nice day yesterday.

@grapau27 Thanks for the pictures on the ship of you and your lovely wife. It looks so roomy with less passengers.

@rafinmd Thanks for taking us along. Enjoy the event this afternoon.

@smitty34877 I hope things start being less hard.

Sharon, I saw a news article this week about Santa Barbara was banning cruise ships either until or thrugh March 2022.  Sorry to be the one to deliver the bad news.

Lenda

No, I knew that so it's not bad news to me that's why I said I hope something works out for Santa Barbara.  Weird but it's still on the itinerary and not really sure what port could be substituted.  What I would really like is an overnight in San Fran, Craig and I have a long list of things we want to do there.

I don’t think we will be going into town for dinner!😁 We’ll be on a ship though.

Hal communication has hit bottom. No E-mail about changes just someone’s Navigator App showed changes. Web site still shows original itinerary. We had to delete the Nav App in order to see new itinerary. Others on Roll Call can’t get Nav App to update even after deleting.

Oh sweet Jesus, if I had an overnight at Half Moon Cay, I'd book one of the cabanas, or get together with another couple or two and book a villa, order dinner on the beach, and enjoy the night in a hammock!  Please let us know if this is real or just someone's idea of a joke.

Smooth Sailing!  🙂🙂🙂
