Independent shore excursions

There are three couples going on an Alaskan cruise in September, '22.  Has anyone used the Shore Excursions Group?  With there being six of us, I think we can do something on our own cheaper than all of us paying for an excursion through the cruise line -- for example, renting a jeep to drive around.  Their website indicates they've never had anyone miss the ship; and if they do, they'll pay the expenses to get you to the next port.  Reviews on Yelp mostly seem good, but some of their European excursions people had issues.

Is there another company anyone would recommend?

Shore Excursions Group is not a tour provider, they are a broker. They take your money, and then find a low bid tour vendor to serve you. What does this mean? It means the prices are usually very good, but if you have a problem, it may be very difficult to resolve the problem.

If you do a search on Cruise Critic, you will see many discussions on them, with lots of people loving their prices, and some complaining about a variety of issues. The company has been in Europe for quite a while, so lots of experience over there.

The common recommendation is to seek local suggested vendors on your own, and deal directly.

We like to rent a car in Juneau and DIY our visit.  It costs about $100-120 to rent for the day.  It’s nice to be able to beat the cruise ship crowds at Mendenhall (go there first!) and go where we want to go.  Love to get out of town and have a picnic at Eagle State Park (think that’s the name?).

We use Juneau Car Rental.  They use older cars but we’ve never had a problem or an issue with them.  Great customer service.

Harv and Marv Whale Watching in Juneau.  With 6 guests, you could book your own boat.

We used them and had a blast! There were only 3 couples (4 others) plus the Captain and it was very much worth it. Yes, Shore Excursions Group is a broker. There should be tons of info on this board. We put it to good use for our Alaska cruises.
