Sammigar Posted November 7, 2021 #2 Share Posted November 7, 2021 The only smoking area I remember seeing on the Edge was near the pool on the starboard side. It was up a flight of stairs midway between the pool deck and track - well away from any cabins.
Silkroad Posted November 7, 2021 #3 Share Posted November 7, 2021 Smoking areas are: outside Eden, deck 5, port side aft Sunset Bar, deck 15, starboard side aft next to Pool Bar, deck 15, starboard midship

helen haywood Posted November 7, 2021 #5 Share Posted November 7, 2021 Generally the smoke from the smoking areas at Sunset Bar do not affect the non-smoking areas. As to how many smokers, depends on the ship, the itinerary, the passengers, the weather and the time of day.
39august Posted November 7, 2021 #6 Share Posted November 7, 2021 If the wind is blowing from starboard toward port, the smoke at Sunset bar I find unbearable. Many cigar smokers often.
Denny01 Posted November 7, 2021 #7 Share Posted November 7, 2021 My experience was if you were sitting at the same table, yes you’d get 2nd hand smoke. But w the ship underway and more than a light breeze the smoke is no issue. and I made 2 cruises on Edge and enjoyed the Sunset bar and barely noticed a smoker. den.

Is it one poor smoker or ten? Depends on the cruise. On my fully booked Edge TA in 2019, there were several smokers in the Sunset Bar during busy times. Though sensitive to smoke, I had no issues when the ship was under way, and hardly noticed it in port. On my recent Caribbean cruise on Edge (sailing at reduced passenger load of 1,300) I rarely saw a smoker in the Sunset Bar. IMO the smoking areas on Edge are well placed for maximum air flow, which makes life easier for everyone. I smell whiffs of smoke most often while using the walking/running track. These are very brief periods as I pass the smoking areas. No big deal.
Denny01 Posted November 7, 2021 #9 Share Posted November 7, 2021 I’d assume when the smoke was blown from starboard to port bothering others, it was when the ship was docked (and the Sunset is usually not open then) or not making much headway at all. The natural wind from starboard to port to blow the smoke inboard would have to be very strong to overcome any real ship speed ahead. It’s possible, but not usual. den

Denny01 Posted November 7, 2021 #11 Share Posted November 7, 2021 Just now, zitsky said: Bars are closed when in port? Do they open in the evening? Not sure of what is going on since restarting. When in port at night, yes the lounges are open. And they do have drinks and a lounge or so available all day, just more limited in port during port touring and so on. Obviously not many passengers on board; staff are involved with other functions and with drills and so on during port calls. Den

Denny01 Posted November 8, 2021 #14 Share Posted November 8, 2021 I posted Bad Gouge! I’d thought many of the lunges were closed till evening, and only a few open in port during the day. Sorry on that! den
helen haywood Posted November 8, 2021 #15 Share Posted November 8, 2021 Not only are many bars open while the ship is in port, but specific to this thread, people can certainly be smoking at the Sunset Bar regardless of whether it’s open or not. 39august Posted November 8, 2021 #16 Share Posted November 8, 2021 Yes, I was referring to smoke while docked. All are correct that smoke is usually a non-issue when the ship is moving. Many bars are open when in port, with the exception of the casino bar and those bars that always have designated hours, i.e. World Class and Martini. You can pretty much bet on the Pool Bar being open good and early every day, something like 9 AM. If that's not early enough for you, I believe you can get an eye opener at Cafe al Bacio somewhere around the crack of dawn (but I've never confirmed it). Many others open around lunchtime. Some may not open until mid afternoon or early evening. Hours can vary from ship to ship, as well. Some bars may open later on port days, but -something- will be open. The only bar I know of that is always closed while in port is the Casino Bar.

I am not a smoker but trying to be open and fair. There are a large number of bars and outside areas on these ships that do not allow smoking. The vast majority of the ship. Only a small amount of outside space where smoking is actually allowed. So why go there if it is bothersome? Lots of other places to enjoy smoke-free. It is great that Celebrity has smoke-free casinos. On some S-Class ships that I have been on there was (is) a smoking area near (not at) the Sunset Bar port-side. And smoking is no longer allowed for quite a few years aft on M-Class ships which have the Oceanview Bar there. Open cabin balconies below. The point is that smoking is much much less now and severely restricted in society and as an extension on cruise ships. But not completely eliminated. We all know that. I do understand those that do not want to have balconies near the smoking areas though and they are asking the right questions here about that. The entire sunset bar is not a smoking location, there is a small area off to the side that smoking is allowed. I did not see anything in T's post about telling me to go elsewhere, just mentioned additional locations where NO smoking is allowed.
mauimary Posted November 8, 2021 Author #21 Share Posted November 8, 2021 Since I was the one who originally asked the question I should be fine in a deck 9 midship balcony stateroom on the port side. After I booked it I got to thinking about it. thank you for your input on my question.
Denny01 Posted November 8, 2021 #22 Share Posted November 8, 2021 I realize each of us have a different level of tolerance to secondhand smoke, but I’d not be concerned about a balcony SR on the aft area above or below the small smoking area of the Sunset lounge on E-Class or S-Class ships. There are no SRs on the decks above or below that area and even in port, smoke isn’t going raft down two decks or more. For M-class ships, yes there are balconies on decks just above and below. No experience with those, but the M-Class SR spreadsheet could help know more for those few SRs that could be possibly impacted. Den
