Hurtigruten will be fined, after the Covid scandal on board M/S Roald Amundsen in 2020.

The results after a very long police investigation, following the Covid scandal on board M/S Roald Amundsen two voyages, from Tromsø and around Svalbard in July 2020, are now published.

 

In a press release yesterday, the Troms police district writes that Hurtigruten will be fined NOK 1 million (NOK = Norwegian kroner) for its inadequate handling of the Covid outbreak on board M/S Roald Amundsen. (NOK 1 million is at today's exchange rate, approx. USD 115,000.).

 

The captain on board has been fined NOK 30,000, and one of the two ship doctors has been fined NOK 40,000.

 

For Hurtigruten's CEO Daniel Skjeldam, and former operations director Bent Martini (now CEO of Havila Kystruten), the prosecution's office believes that there is no basis for personal criminal liability, and the case is therefore closed for them.

 

Attorney Berit Reiss-Andersen, who represents Hurtigruten Coastal AS, says that the details of the fine will be reviewed. When the lawyer and the board of the company have concluded, they will come back with more comments.

 

The lawyers for both the captain and the ship's doctor, say that their clients will not accept the fine.

 

It will therefore still be some time before we know the final outcome of the legal consequences of the Covid scandal on board M/S Roald Amundsen

Hurtigruten states in a press release today, that they accept the million fine after the Covid outbreak.

Hurtigruten’s CEO Daniel Skjeldam, says that the company accepts the fine, and that they feel that the police have made a long and thorough investigation.
