you may never know if the plastic is cracked somewhere inside the seat.

I personally prefer not to gamble with my kid's safety. If the kid is under 4, you are flying on a US airline, and have a harnessed seat with you - just use it on the plane. You got it to the gate - what's a few feet more to ensure safety?

We actually plan to scrap ours after our flight, because DD has almost outgrown it. We could've rented one from the car company as this trip is land based but d/t reasons you mentioned that was a heck no (renting one, or borrowing, whatever car co. was offering). We have 2 others a tiny bit larger for other vehicles and also a much larger one. When we bought the shorter ones since they were Infant-to-toddlers we thought they'd fit the entire time up to age 4 but apparently not. Our mistake.

This flight for us is a long time, from Utah to Maine and with DD very close to outgrowing it, I doubt she'd be comfy for such a long span on the flight. For us we're going to hope it'll be okay I really doubt the bag would protect against a crak. But every one can make that call on their own.
