kona_wahine Posted April 4, 2022 #1 Share Posted April 4, 2022 Will our Verizon phones work in the alaska ports on our cruise? So use to going to the Caribbean it just dawned on me we will still be in the US and I guess we don’t have to put the phone on airplane mode. rjhollan Posted April 4, 2022 #2 Share Posted April 4, 2022 They should, though AT&T has a much better presence in AK.

Rare steve4031 Posted April 5, 2022 #4 Share Posted April 5, 2022 The Verizon coverage map shows coverage in port areas. If you go farther from port you might not have coverage
don't-use-real-name Posted April 5, 2022 #5 Share Posted April 5, 2022 Alaska is the Final Last Frontier in communications - - - - - Yes your Verizon service will work in Alaska ports - but in outback areas you may do better Marine Radio or with a pair of tin cans on a string (a really l-o-n-g string) Beware of Roaming Charges in rural areas and the spotty coverage there-within. With most cell phone services you should be good for a 3-5 mile radius of the port city center. Elevated points better i.e. Mt Roberts Tram Juneau Straight flat unobstructed line of sight at sea maybe 7+ miles ? Normally where the cruise ships dock there is ample cell phone service coverage About cell phones and cruising in Alaska take note of using your service while port calling i.e. Victoria BC Canada or originating at Vancouver BC Canada --- does your plan include this ? Take care of not being accidently connected to the ships telephone and telegraph service and incurring strange charges from Neptune Communications Links (NCL) Wi-Fi. Rare karatemom2 Posted April 5, 2022 #6 Share Posted April 5, 2022 I have Verizon and have never had any issue getting service in any of the Alaska ports we have visited.
kona_wahine Posted April 5, 2022 Author #7 Share Posted April 5, 2022 Thanks, we would be sure to put it in airplane mode during sea days and during our Victoria stop. It’s not like we NEED cell service, just will be nice to be able to touch base with actual phone service. Will have my 12 year old granddaughter so she will want to talk to mom. (Or more likely mom will want to talk to her)
