The public buses do not have luggage compartments so you would need to drag all your luggage aboard and hope that the driver does not object. Taking luggage on the Metro is certainly possible but you really need to protect your valuables. Gypsies (Roma) and other pick pockets routinely work the Green Line between Athens and Pireaus (this line is used by many heading to the ferry port). If you are carrying luggage a good case can be made for spending some extra money and taking a taxi from Athens to the port. Hank

Both the buses and metro were excellent. I've taken both several times, and never had any problems (on the X buses; I don't know how it is on local buses). Good luck! What you are describing could be applied to every major city in Europe, and to every major city city in the US that has public transportation. Traveling by metro or by bus with luggage in Athens is pretty much the same as traveling with luggage on metro or bus anywhere else, @Yesimapirate. I agree except that personal crime (pick pockets and purse snatching) has long been a big problem on that Green Line. For those aware of the situation and who take some simple precautions it should not be a big deal, but having luggage does make personal security more difficult (i.e. you only have so many hands). Having traveled extensively in Europe for over forty years we are pretty aware of the places of greatest risk (to tourists) and that Athens to Pireaus line ranks up there with the Ramblas in Barcelona in terms of pick pocket risk. As to public buses, in many parts of the world folks are not allowed on buses with large pieces of luggage. Hank

petepie Posted August 5, 2022 #32 Share Posted August 5, 2022 Taxi from the square to lions gate (cruise terminal c, port gate e12) was 25 euros last week. Taxi stand is right in the square, so very easy to find.
