My wife has had cancer treatment , it will be one year since the Chemo finished when we go on our cruise. When providing pre existing medical answers for cruise Insurance ,depending on the company they will either ( A ) decline your application for all cover if you have had cancer in the last 5 years,  ( B ) not cover you for pre=existing cancer but will for everything else, ( C ) give you the opportunity to pay extra cost to cover it. Now say you have Covid coverage, and you are allowed to be insured for all but cancer and were unlucky enough to catch covid , could they possibly decline a Covid claim by saying you have had cancer and your immune system has been compromised. Just a thought.

I am in a similar boat.  Cancer treatment will be >1 year away from our cruise in November.  Which companies are you considering?  Cheers!

HI Lucy , congratulations on getting through a very tough period . My wife is now in a good position as I hope you are. We are struggling to find some decent insurance as we are also in our 80s.At this stage we are considering Covermore, as we understand they allow you cover if you have had cancer at an extra cost. They give you the option to decline it but still allow you to insure everything else. We are also waiting see what Australian Seniors & Budget insurance have to offer when they start insuring cruises, they suspended travel insurance at the start of Covid also Budget insurance.Dont bother with fastcover they dont want to know you when you mention cancer. I hope this helps.

Cheers John

Good idea. There are some crooks in the car hire business. Always check fine print such as not covered for single car accident (Tas) not covered for driving between dusk and Dawn (Uluru)

Also not covered for the road up to the Lamington National Park (Qld)

Crazy thing is if you had cancer and have had surgery plus treatment and declared clear you are not going to cark it on a cruise, cancer is not an overnight problem. I would like to know why the insurance companies consider it a big risk to them.

I agree totally. You probably wouldn't know the cancer had reared its ugly had again until your next oncology check-up and that doesn't happen on a ship.

We recently drove down the road from near Dorrigo to Grafton. Sign saying “damaged road” but not closed. I have never seen such a badly pot holed road.  Doubt that road would be covered for car hire insurance.

My daughter blew a tyre on that road a couple of months ago.

I am of the opinion that the ones making these rules have little or no specialised medical knowledge and there is no  such thing as varying degrees of medical or physical conditions.

True, it would be nice if insurance representatives ( knowing cruise customers are many ) would  follow the CC topics and take note of our post and maybe answer some of our complaints.

You are so right Carole, in fact I have had enough of trying to sort out cruise insurance at the moment so I am going to ban anything to do with it from my dreams lol.

Happy birthday in the next two weeks. Mine will be in the following two weeks from yours when I will be 80.  I don't have to get the insurance while I am 79  because my wife is over 80 and our insurance will be calculated on that. Not long for your cruise you must be getting excited, we have to wait until January 2023 so I have more time to decide about the insurance. Good luck with your insurance I hope it works out okay for you.

Cheers John

There are some companies like TID that have a list of 40 or so pre existing conditions they cover (many of which are very minor like acne, vitamin b12 deficiency or bunions). I doubt they would cause any issues travelling. They don’t consider any other conditions at all. Most insurance companies don’t cover if if a parent in a nursing passes away. So I’m not covered if anything happens to my 95 year old dad and I need to either cancel or return early from a holiday.

I find that finding the correct insurance and reading though to find out what they do and most importantly don’t cover is more difficult than booking a cruise or holiday.

I agree.  I start with the general exclusions, then particular exclusions.  I learnt just how bad.our travel insurance was When my daughter lived in London and we used to travel overseas together annually.  We used to compare policy exclusions.  One example was cover for car, which got more restrictive every year.  Last time I looked you couldn’t leave anything in a locked car!  Bit hard when you are travelling by car for five months!

I agree. I knew two people who had terminal cancer who were given permission to travel overseas by their specialists. They both went, one to UK, one to NZ, with no Ill health, and died much later happy.m

I noticed in the fine print of the Insure and Go they only cover for around 15 days cat rental. That is no good if you are wanting to travel around Europe for a couple of months.

Thanks for the info John.  The main thing that worries me is any need for medical evacuation which I understand is the most expensive issue (at least for local cruises).  My first trip back into the ocean is a local Aussie cruise so when in port I could always head for the nearest hospital.  I could risk paying a few thousand for medical care at sea or even for quarantine on land.  However when sailing, the idea of paying many tens of thousands for a helicopter ride isn't filling me with joy.

Unfortunately  Medi Vac is the one thing you must have ( damned if you do and damned if you don't ) This is why I would feel more at ease to have international insurance even on a domestic cruise. Going up the coast you are still far enough out at sea to be classed in international waters. These are only my thoughts. Might be worth talking to the Insurance company you will deal with. Maybe their domestic cover will include medi Vac !!

Cheers John
