We are going a few days early and staying at Sophie’s Station Suites. Does anyone have any suggestions on what we should do while there? Sight seeing, should we rent a car or is there a bus, or taxi to get to different places. We have never been to Alaska any help would be appreciated.

Thank You

Sue

When we had a free day in Fairbanks, we rode the city bus to the Museum of the North, the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum and Pioneer Park. The museums are highly recommended.

Our hotel was near downtown; we walked around downtown.

Your hotel is out near the airport. There is a city bus stop on University Ave in front of the hotel.

In the past, prior to Covid-19, the Sophie Station offered a shuttle trolley type vehicle which had a scheduled route around Fairbanks, including the Museum of the North and Antique Auto Museum.  Contact the hotel to ask if that trolley will be offered again.  If not then consider renting a vehicle.

The Sophie Station is owned by Fountainhead.  The Antique Auto Museum is also owned by Fountainhead, and in the past the museum offered a discount for people staying at a Fountainhead property.

You will 100% want to rent a car... Fairbanks is not a great Uber/Lyft/taxi city in any capacity.

That said, there's a TON of stuff to do in Fairbanks. Gold Dredge 8 and Riverboat Discovery are two *excellent* experiences, easily among the top five touristy things I've ever done. Try scheduling one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

If you like museums, the Museum of the North at Fairbanks University is excellent and manageable in a few hours.

And if you have a car, I'd recommend driving out to Chena Hot Springs for an afternoon for a soak.
