Tee Rick, I had my booster the Friday before Thanksgiving and tested positive post-cruise on March 29 - you do the math. DH got boosted as soon as boosters were approved (he takes a mildly immunosuppressive medication), early Sept 2021 - he never tested positive or had a symptom.

I think depending on how you interpret the data, that measurable protection from boosters is 3 months at best (I saw an abstract from some Israeli data that made it sound like protection from multiple boosters went down with each booster and might only be a month).

BUT, that is measurable Abs I think, not cellular immunity and not protection from serious illness and death and possibly not even risk of infection.

Its all anecdotal, but my thought is that at best you will have enhanced protection for about 3 months.

The $64K question is do I have better immunity now that I have had Covid.

Yes that is why I asked the question.  We are going on an Ireland/Iceland 10 night cruise Aug 29 out of Southampton on Silhouette.    My original booster was Nov 1, 2021.  So I am thinking of getting my second booster to be better protected for this cruise on or about June 1.

I'm debating the second booster. I will likely get it eventually, still working part time and its too hard to control my exposure risk while working. BUT, they aren't giving boosters at the hospital yet, so I have to decide to go elsewhere and maybe not get Pfizer or wait. We cruise in May and again in October. I should be pretty good for May even without the booster, but I don't really want to wait until August or Sept to get boosted again. Who knows what's right - I don't!

Your plan sounds as reasonable as anything else, especially if you consider yourself otherwise low risk.

My husband got his second booster last week, but again he has other reasons to get it.

I would love to the see the post cruise Covid number on any given cruise. I bet it is higher than most think as I see this “when I got home” storyline on CC and FB a lot.

we got off Edge a few weeks ago and tested positive a few days later. Mild cold symptoms and negative now.

I have the feeling that the Covid caught by most vaccinated and boosted people is of the Omicron break-through” type, which is little more than a cold. The only reason these people isolate is to prevent transmission to the unvaccinated.

I believe the official advice on second boosters is something like that people over 50 with first booster four months or more ago should get a second.

Also curious if you had trip insurance and, if so, was it through the cruise line or a private company?

We got trip insurance through celebrity and it was about $150 per person for the 8 day cruise.

The experts say yes, but it doesn't last long (4 weeks)  before it starts to decline.  Now is the time to do those things you might've put off, in my opinion.

I agree, I think we are seeing an Omicron wave which I guess might or might not be covered under the vaccine... depending on what you read. It honestly has been exactly like a head cold.

That is very interesting, but just so many variables.  I always ask people who have gotten Covid if they have an idea how it may have happened.  Surpriseingly, many have ideas and are willing to share.  Earlier on this was not the case; however, I believe we all keep learning a lot if we are open and care.

I have my suspicions, top of which is the over crowded elevator s or the steam room my husband loves. But it would only be a guess. I can tell you I got complacent and stopped wearing my mask and was many times very close to others but continued to wash and disinfectant my hands. Idk, I would do it again with more mask wearing.😀

I think I got it in the thermal suite.

So will Celebrity switch soon to requiring Up To Date instead of Fully Vaccinated?  I hope so!  Moderna and Pfizer are testing multi-variant booster vaccines.  Not sure when they might be ready for us.  Moderna reported some good results a few days ago.  We had the original Moderna 2-dose series with a Pfizer booster.  We will definitely get a second booster in time to protect us for our August cruise.    There are no reports available from cruise lines, but I definitely worry about the passengers and particularly crew members who are "fully Vaccinated" with only the 1-shot J&J vaccine.  Pretty worthless at this point IMO.  Is that partly responsible for the numbers on cruise ships?  Much of the crew early on was given J&J.

Yes, my next cruise isn't until October

Is it possible Moderna's new booster might be available in September or early October?  I definitely plan to wear a KN95 mask in elevators and crowded areas.

I got my second booster this month  and fully expect I will get another hopefully better version this fall. I have a two crowded (outdoor) events in the next 6 weeks and wanted to be protected against severe disease.

In answer to both those questions - who knows?!

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-to-make-smart-decisions-about-covid-risk-benefit1/?utm_source=pocket-newtab

This is a very interesting article from Scientific American about risk assessment and the limits of risk assessment. Buried in the article is a link to this risk assessment tool

https://www.covidtaser.com/relativerisk

which is also quite interesting. Be careful in using the tool, when you change the group to Vaccinated and Boosted, the risk bars look the same, but are actually an order of magnitude less.

There's not enough data, I guess, to put in the model for all the outcomes for all risks for vaccinated and boosted - most of the bars are for unvaccinated.

This might help with perspective for some people posting here with lots of questions and concerns - of course we are talking about vacations - a very optional activity vs day to day life

This is ridiculous speculation that people who had the J&J have no protection. Stop with the misinformation.

How long before the cruise did you get your booster shot?

Others responding here who got sick- did you receive a booster before cruising?  Same question- how long before?  Anybody get a second booster and still got sick?

I am asking because we are eligible for our second booster now but want to get maximum effectiveness for our cruise end of August.

We're not eligible for second boosters (under 50), but my wife and I both have our first boosters and got them in late September.

We may have to learn to cruise with this “cold”…seeing as most fully vaccinated people are reporting “cold like symptoms”.

Having been suffering from COVID this week, they are cold-like in nature, but not in degree.  It feels worse than any cold I've had.  Not as bad as the worst case of flu that I've ever had though.

I am reminded of one trip in an elevator with a woman (who was not wearing mask) up to the Ocean View Cafe.  When we got out, she ran into someone she knew, and I overheard her discussing that she was getting food for her friend, who was in her cabin, in bed, sick.  The woman in the elevator said she was getting her friend food, since she gave her her cold, it was only fair that she fetch her food.  We had our masks on, but overhearing that conversation definitely made us wonder at the time (and definitely makes us wonder now).

I can’t speak for the OP, but we masked up anytime we were outside the cabin, removing only to eat and drink and even replacing between courses/drinks.

So did you remain Covid-free on or just after your cruise?  Sorry that you are feeling the effects of Covid now.  But not from the cruise?

I think that enough pax have figured out that Covid is probably "cold like" symptoms and why go through the ship protocols - isolation, haz mat suits and escort off the ship into a limo at the end  - if that is all it is.

Pre cruise testing is interesting but it isn't stopping on board outbreaks and I think that outbreak number is higher than you think once you include post cruise and non reporters on board

wonder how long the on board isolation can/will go on now that other public covid protocols are going away?

Surely some people are walking around the ships with cold-like symptoms and not reporting them or testing for fear of isolation.

I also came away with Covid from this same cruise.  There are about 25 people from the facebook group I'm in that also came away with it.  Also about 20 or more from a large singles group that booked.  People who got Covid on ship reported about 20 passengers and 39 employees.  So well over 100.  I heard there were B2B people who had to get off the prior sailing due to Covid, so I think it carried over from prior cruise.  I'd do it all over again, but having Covid is/was the pits.  Still having symptoms (tested positive on Sunday).

Hi Rick.  I had my two Moderna doses back in December 2020 and January 2021, booster in October 2021.  Was elegible for my second booster a week before our Edge April 10 cruise.  Decided to Mix and Match and received the Pfizer booster this time. We booked a Villa to avoid the crowds, we had lunch every day in Le Grand Bistro for the same reason, I wore my mask (KN 95 or KF94) all the time, only taking it off in the dining room and the retreat pool. We "joined" the Silent disco, from a distance in deck 4.  We tested ourselves a couple of times and daily starting Saturday April 16.  Our flight back home was only 2 and a half hours, in business class, though the couple in front of us couldn't keep their masks on.  Tuesday morning my test was negative but before going to bed I felt a little congested and sneezed twice. Yesterday morning, before going to work,  I tested myself again and was positive, tested again with a different brand, and positive again. Decided to cancel my patients for the rest of the week.

FYI my husband's three first doses were with Pfizer and received his second booster (Moderna this time) the same day I received mine. He didn't wear his mask as much as I did and he still negative today.  I started taking Paxlovid yesterday and the only side effect so far is an awful metallic taste.

I think that I was infected in Luminae.  The retreat is completely full and Luminae is too crowded IMHO. Do I regret going on this cruise? no, but I do hope that Moderna's new booster comes out before our September cruise and oral antivirals were easier to get. Still, hope my story helps you decide when you should get your second booster.  Keep in mind that I received my second booster only a week before the cruise.

Happy cruising Rick!!
