1A NOT bunks?

countercast

Recommended Posts

We booked 2 cabins, both 1A guarantee on the Legend for Xmas. I was under the impression that they would be bunks (gymnastics in store for DH and me!) but in checking the ship's rooms through BPC, it states that 1A is '2 twins that can be made into a King'. Is this correct? Can I get my hopes up? icon_razz.gif

I don't know about the Legend, but on the Miracle, the 1A's don't have bunks.

I'm pretty sure that BPC lists the correct info, so it looks like you won't have to be doing gymnastics after all!!!

Per Carnival's website, cabin description for Cat 1A:

Stateroom with upper and lower berths. Amenities include: TV, spacious bathroom with shower, sitting area, wall safe in closet and dressing area. Stateroom is 160 square feet.

If it were up to me, I'd trust Carnival's own site before an online TA's when it comes to cabin descriptions.

I have never heard of a "1A" guarantee. I have seen a "1S" guarantee.

1A cabins have a standard single bed and a pulldown upper berth. They are simular but not exactly "bunk beds".

The 1S guarantee on travelocity states that the cabin is 185 sf. that would mean to me that it is atleast a category 4A.

I'm not sure what you have but your TA or PVP should be able to tell you exactly what you have booked. They should have done so before you payed any money.

I am looking at Travelocity now for Tuesday Dec. 21, 2004 sailing of the Legend. They show an "IS" category for $899/person. This is an "Inside guaranteed" 185 sf. This means you will be in atleast a 4A, not a 1A. If this is what you have booked, great, if not I'd be on the phone finding out what I have.

Im booked in a 1A on Destiny that doesnt have a bunk. Its located at the extreme forward of the ship. It does have 2 portholes,a twin bed and a single convertible sofa.

Every ship has a 1A GUAR. Go back to travelocity and try to book a 1A cabin, you will see the last selection on the list as "GUAR"

Tef,

I know for a fact Carnival's web site is NOT correct.

It states that all category 1A's have upper and lower berths and that is NOT true of the Spirit line.

When you call Carnival and speak to a live person who knows what they are talking about, they can tell you if your ship has bunks or not.

The Carnival site does not give accurate descriptions of cabins for all ships, just a general descrition which does not fit all ships as they are all very different.

The BPC site has more accurate data.

Halos is correct. If you have a very old Carnival brochure, which I do, the 1A's on spirit class ships have a 1A listed as two beds. There is no sofa, no bunks. The 4A's and above have two beds and a sofa which can be convertible or not. I think Carnival is keeping the information under wraps in hopes people will book more expensive cabins, IMHO.

The Spirit class is different from the other Carnvial ships. The 1A cabins are just like the category 4 cabins. No bunks. Two twins that can be placed together to make a king.

OctoberDestiny I think we could be confusing terms. Travelocity does offer a category 1A. If you book it you select your cabin. You can do this for any category cabin available on any sailing. the term "guarantee" means that you do not select your cabin. You are guaranteed the lowest level stateroom or better in any class of cabin ie; Inside, Ocean View, Balcony, Suite.

Travelocity does not offer a 1A "guarantee". They offer a category 1A where you select your cabin. Travelocity does offer a category IS which; and I quote directly from their wab page, states "Each room features twin beds that convert to a king, television, and bathroom with shower (185 sq.ft.)"

As I mentioned earlier..go to travelocity's or any other online booking website and try to book a 1A cabin. The last choice you will see says GUAR. People book 1A Guar all the time. Since there are such a limited number most are almost always upgraded to a 4A or higher.

Jeff I see what you are saying now. You can indeed book a 1A guarantee, I stand corrected. I am a bit confused as to why anyone would though. The category IS guarentees you atleast 185 sq ft. for the same price on every sailing I have looked at. Why take even the small risk of getting a 1A?

Countercast—

Those that have first-hand experience should really address the discussion of 1a cabins. Unfortunately, cruisers that have never booked let alone experienced a 1a cabin on CCL ships will tell you their theory or offer website after website to peruse. Typically the photos do not accurately reflect the actual 1a cabins on the newer ships (from my personal experience 2001 and newer). Read above what poster ‘cruisingator2’ had to say—that’s the way it is on Spirit class ships, and yes, I have first-hand experience with booking/occupying a 1a cabin on a Spirit class ship. It’s not a bunk bed. It’s twin beds that can be combined into one bed.

Enjoy your cruise, countercast. And, rest assured you don’t have to perform those gymnastics moves unless of course that’s your preference.

Well, I for one booked a 1A guarantee on the Miracle, because it was much less that an IS guarantee. The 1A's are the same size as Cat. 4, but I believe there are only a few of them on the ship. The PVP tried to talk me into booking a specific 1A cabin, but I insisted on a guarantee, knowing that I will likely be upgraded. And if not, that's ok too, the price was just too good to pass on!

Fantasy class have Upper & Lowers (set up L shaped). Destiny Class has 1 twin and a convertible sofa usually with port holes. Spirits & Conquest I can't tell you about.

Different sites seem to name their guarantee categories different. You need to read the description for each as it will vary. Some state that a IS guarantee is for any inside cabin which could also include the 1A category and others say it has 2 twins that are convertible to a king which depending on the ship could be a 4A or better. Read the fine print and double check if you are worried to make sure you get the minimum you can deal with. If you are looking to get a higher category, watch the prices and if they drop you may be able to upgrade

The 1A's on the Miracle are listed as 185 square feet, the same size as all the other interior and most ocean view cabins.

That's the nice thing about Carnival, even the cheapest rooms don't make you feel claustrophobic, like on other lines.

Well, I appreciate all your replies and did hear back from BPC. He assured me that on the Legend and its class of ships, a 1A does indeed mean two beds or 1 Queen (not King apparently) - yippee! Of course, as we Carnival cruisers know, the room size is still 185 sq ft - plenty of room for gymnastics.. icon_wink.gif

JEFFY! YOU ARE WRONG, Honey!

On Destiny, the 1A we share is TWO beds on the floor (king) with a FULL SIZED SOFA, a coffee table, the usual Cat. 4 cabinetry and two portholes. The bathroom is a LITTLE smaller, but the room is the same as a 4A.

An upgrade from the Destiny 1A to a 4A IS NOT AN UPGRADE, except for location, if you consider the portholes (and use of robes! icon_biggrin.gif).

I would MUCH rather have the portholes than the upgrade!!!! I absolutely loved seeing outside from my cabin!

Jeffy! It rarely spun! It was the whole SHIP that was spinning, not just the cabin.

On reflection, the SF of the 1A might seem a little different from a 4A in that it is configured differently. The two beds are already pushed together near the portholes and the couch is towards the door. In the 4A's, initially, the beds are in an "L" configuration with a corner table between. Also, TV in 1A is on the vanity area near the phone where the TV in the 4A is on the wall in the corner.

Also, Jeffy, the added bonus is ALSO a feature of our cabin!!!! icon_biggrin.gif Geeze, I hope you get it!

I recently booked a "1A guarantee", so yes they definitely exist! This will be my first time w/a guarantee, so I'm experimenting. I really wanted a 5A, but seems there are none of that type on the Sensation. I may wish I had booked my usual assigned cabin? icon_confused.gif

I had the typical 1A cabin on the Sensaton, a bed on the floor and the upper bunk recessed from the ceiling. Since I was by myself I didn't have the upper bunk pulled down which made for a roomy cabin! Yes I did miss a window/portholes but the price was right. On the Triumph, I had the other type of 1A cabin. Bed on the floor with a couch that was also another bed. You couldn't put the two beds together. There were also 2 porthole windows. This cabin was all the way forward on the ship and seemed to be bigger in square feet then the 4A cabins. If you can snag one of those cabins, it's a deal!

Cotton, there are plenty of 5A cabins on the Sensation, don't give up hope!

Jan, thx. I'm sitting here not happy because I really don't want to NOT be able to see out. I'm just trying to watch my budget, so booked the 1A in high hopes of something better.

BUT, I may just give my PVP a call today, and bite the bullet for a 6A assigned cabin....since she said no 5As.? It's just that, as a solo cruiser, I always pay the 150% rate, BUT the 6A is 200% !!! (That's a lot for a retired gal like me!) icon_rolleyes.gif
