Rare PrincessArlena'sDad Posted September 10, 2022 #1 Share Posted September 10, 2022 Glory out of New Orleans: 7 days, Mahoney Bay, Belize, and Cozumel Horizon out of Miami: 8 days: Aruba, Curacao, La Romana, Amber Cove We would be traveling in the first part of Aug. Depending on the date, the Glory is $1500-$2500 less than the Horizon date that works for us. We have never been to New Orleans before, and would like to spend some time there prior to sailing, but not sure if August is the time to do that. Do you think the extra money is worth the newer ship + the extra day? Should we save New Orleans for a non-summer trip? Of all the stops, Cozumel is the only one we've been to before.
firefly333 Posted September 10, 2022 #2 Share Posted September 10, 2022 I wasnt a big fan of vista though it has JiJis a pay restaurant. Glory has a lot of things I loved. I've read about a lot of crime in new orleans and know people who had it. Google new orleans and crime before you explore. I had a cabin mate from the UK who lost all her documents and money to a thief. She lost her passport so wasnt easy to fly back to the UK. It was her birthday and she went gambling and drinking. A guy on a ship out of new orleans was pick pocketed. New Orleans is kinda known for that. Be very careful exploring the city. Dont put your wallet in a back pocket like he did. I prefer the ports more unusual but I like all the ships. Horizon isnt that new. Mardi gras I'd go for it.

cruisingguy007 Posted September 10, 2022 #4 Share Posted September 10, 2022 That's tough, I'd pick Horizon but that is a significant difference, too much to ignore but all things being equal, Horizon, plus more days is always better than less and the 8 day cruises are more limited.
Rare Saint Greg Posted September 10, 2022 #5 Share Posted September 10, 2022 (edited) Horizon based on ship and extra day. But not for that much money. Edited September 10, 2022 by Saint Greg

Is money no object? Are you ok with older ships? I would pick the Glory. You haven't been to NOLA before so it will be new. Sounds like you want to go to NOLA. You aren't missing much imho, but it's something new for you. The casinos big but not as flashy as LV. Harriah's is alright. I assume NOLA will be punishingly humid in Aug, but you will need to ask someone for their opinion on that.

Rare ledges1 Posted September 10, 2022 #12 Share Posted September 10, 2022 Go to N.O. as a separate trip and skip the cruise. Belize is not a good port for me. I am doing the Horizon cruise in October and looking forward to going on a newer ship. I have been on the Glory many times. Actually, I prefer the Valor in New Orleans. It has a Red Frog Pub and the Glory does not. If you are looking at balconies, maybe you could look at an inside room on Horizon to lower the cost. I have done 26 cruises and had a balcony only one time.

mondello Posted September 10, 2022 #14 Share Posted September 10, 2022 I was in New Orleans for Valor B2B 7/24-8/4. Enjoyed 2 days both pre- and post-cruise. Be aware rain rolled in every afternoon but, cleared up quick. Great walkable city. Don’t get tipsy, don’t be a target.
skrufy Posted September 10, 2022 #15 Share Posted September 10, 2022 Love N.O, love Miami, love 8 days over 7 days, love both itineraries. Never been on Horizon, been on Glory 5 times, our favorite ship. I would pick Horizon only because I have never been on her. Otherwise if all were equal I would go to N.O. and sail on Glory. jsglow Posted September 10, 2022 #16 Share Posted September 10, 2022 That is a HUGE price differential. Seriously, some would $1500 for one day on Carnival? Not me.
P&PNH Posted September 10, 2022 #17 Share Posted September 10, 2022 Interesting choice to make. Have been on the Horizon and it is a nice ship, unless you loose an engine like we did last November, and have to skip 2 ports. Have not been on the Glory but looks to be nice, and I would choose the smaller ship. Weather in either place will be hot that time of year, and it is also hurricane season. Delay to late November and go out of NO. It has a lot of history and should be safe during the day to explore. Turquoise Bay on the other side of Roatan has some great reefs and coral for snorkeling. Either way enjoy your cruise.
Rare PrincessArlena'sDad Posted September 10, 2022 Author #18 Share Posted September 10, 2022 Thanks all for the input. Part of the equation is that we have more than enough gift cards to pay for the Horizon cruise. We had purchased the 10% off Allstate gift cards to pay for our 2020 cruise, a 9 day Journey cruise out of New York on the Radiance. So, yeah, we’ve been sitting on these cards for over 2 years. Of course, with the Glory cruise, we’d still have a bunch left for our next cruise… It looks like we need to research summer travel to NOLA a bit more. Any more thoughts on the ports of call for the two cruises? It might come down to that.

May1cruiser Posted September 10, 2022 #21 Share Posted September 10, 2022 Southern Itin is one of our favs. Curacao is one of the most interesting ports. Also enjoy Aruba(two islands in one). Western itin is very easy to book and a lot of deals since most FL ports go there. We always try to go southern when possible since it usually an 8 day.
Rare cruisequeen4ever Posted September 10, 2022 #22 Share Posted September 10, 2022 Both itineraries are good, but the edge would be too the Horizon itineraries due to the ABC islands being so far away so a little bit more challenging to find on a cruise. Between the two ships, it was no competition to do the Horizon, but then you said the price difference. In the case of the price difference, I’d totally do the Glory cruise and have a blast doing the western Caribbean and visiting New Orleans. The fact that you have all those gift cards would help offset if you choose to do the Horizon cruise, but like you said, if you have extra gift cards left over, that just helps you towards your next cruise! Let us know what you decide and happy planning!
Theosprey247 Posted September 10, 2022 #23 Share Posted September 10, 2022 New Orleans is more humid than Satan’s Anus in the summer. So I would pick the Horizon and the ABC’s.
Knights on the Beach Posted September 10, 2022 #24 Share Posted September 10, 2022 I love New Orleans; we've been there several times and always feel safe - just be smart. However, we travel there in February, March or November - not August. We actually had a trip there booked for August last year and came to our senses and cancelled it and booked a cruise out of Port Canaveral instead. I also love Glory but it's been a lot of years since we were on that ship. I'm not a fan of Miami at all but we have been on several cruises from there and survived. My pick would be Horizon for the extra day and the itinerary - but not sure if I'd pay the price difference.
havanadaydreaming Posted September 19, 2022 #25 Share Posted September 19, 2022 if you could set an "imaginary" CCL itinerary what would you select? Me? 7 days. 4 ports. (my wife likes a couple sea days so i included those). Now, this isnt reasonable due to geography but it's four ports i'd looooooove to visit on one trip. St Maarten (my absolute favorite) St Lucia (the Pitons are my "happy place) Grand Turk (home of the best Margaritaville in the world) Cozumel (i love this place plus a great spot to get top shelf tequila/mezcal, which i dig)
