JAN1 Posted March 12, 2023 #1 Share Posted March 12, 2023 I don’t want to buy Wi-Fi on the Celebrity Solstice. Can you use walkie talkies to keep in contact with someone on the ship? Anyone recommend certain walkie talkies? I was going to order some on Amazon Janice Teach4Jan@aol.com Jan1
CruisersTimesThree Posted March 12, 2023 #2 Share Posted March 12, 2023 You could all download the Celebrity app and use that to send messages, no Wi-fi needed.
kathynorth Posted March 12, 2023 #3 Share Posted March 12, 2023 The Celebrity app is free and works off the ship Wi-Fi for free. There is a messaging feature in the app.
JAN1 Posted March 12, 2023 Author #4 Share Posted March 12, 2023 I actually did download the celebrity app but didn’t think you can message someone on the ship using the app. All I want is to be able to message my husband and tell him where I am while on the ship. Many times we do different activities and will be in different places. We are going on the Celebrity Solstice March 18th and only got an inside cabin Janice Jan1

As stated by others, you may do these things on the ship with the app for no extra charge.
RTShaker Posted March 12, 2023 #6 Share Posted March 12, 2023 Sorry, but IMHO walkie talkies without earphones shouldn't be used. A nice quiet text is more appropriate. 13
jelayne Posted March 12, 2023 #7 Share Posted March 12, 2023 In addition to messaging, you can check the menus in the dining room or check the daily activities
JAN1 Posted March 12, 2023 Author #8 Share Posted March 12, 2023 Thanks. We haven’t been a cruise in a very long time and first time in Celebrity
Northern Aurora Posted March 12, 2023 #9 Share Posted March 12, 2023 It has been years since I’ve seen someone trying to use them on a cruise ship. As I remember they were not very effective as one party would be talking really loud but the other party still couldn’t hear them. Please use the app. 4
Rare cruisestitch Posted March 12, 2023 #10 Share Posted March 12, 2023 There is so much metal on the ship it interferes with the use of walkie-talkies. Most people who have tried them don’t bring them a second time.
perakcruiser Posted March 12, 2023 #11 Share Posted March 12, 2023 We got walkie talkies from the kids club (so they can contact us when the baby is "unhappy") on MSC Meraviglia and it worked perfectly. But not sure if outside walkie talkies would work as good.
sunonfire Posted March 12, 2023 #12 Share Posted March 12, 2023 If you all have iPnoes iMessaging works in airplane mode.
AmberCascades Posted March 12, 2023 #13 Share Posted March 12, 2023 We also do it old school style and leave each other post-it notes if necessary. Mostly we have some idea of where the other one is though. We highlight the activities we want to do in the daily so we just use stickies if one of us departs from the expected plan.
islabahia Posted March 12, 2023 #14 Share Posted March 12, 2023 Please no walkie talkies! Download Celebrity app for either android or mac onto your phone and you can message, view activities, etc.

Rare keesar Posted March 12, 2023 #16 Share Posted March 12, 2023 Many years ago, I saw a number of parties using walkies. Problem was that all were on the same channel. Chaos. I have not seen them in a long time. Use the FREE app feature which is more effective. Or leave notes to each other or say "I will meet you at X at this time"
wrk2cruise Posted March 12, 2023 #17 Share Posted March 12, 2023 (edited) As others have said just use the app. The ... bubble at the top right will get you to the messaging screens. No internet package needed. Edited March 12, 2023 by wrk2cruise
broadwaybaby123 Posted March 12, 2023 #18 Share Posted March 12, 2023 We used walkie talkies on my Royal cruise last month in case one of us got separated. My niece was with us and is only 10 so she's not old enough for the chat feature on the app. They worked great, however, you might have to switch channels from channel 1 or 2 to channel 20 or higher. Many times we picked up radio frequencies from the crew channels.
Rare 1025cruise Posted March 12, 2023 #19 Share Posted March 12, 2023 Generally speaking, walkie talkies don't work well on the ships.
phoenix_dream Posted March 12, 2023 #20 Share Posted March 12, 2023 Please do as advised and use the Celebrity app. Just be aware that you need to check your screen - you do not get vibrations or beeps like on cell phones.
mayleeman Posted March 12, 2023 #21 Share Posted March 12, 2023 We learned the hard way that adding a w-t to the stuff you are carrying around in a major pain. And no one near you will enjoy hearing all the transmissions!
miched Posted March 12, 2023 #22 Share Posted March 12, 2023 The problem with the app is you don’t get a notice that there is a message. You have to keep checking it. We both have IPhones and watches. We always have a problem with the delay. I found a way to solve the problem. I just sit at one of 2 bars and she always knows where to find me. Happy cruising 🌊🚢🇺🇸🌅 1

mrgabriel Posted March 12, 2023 #25 Share Posted March 12, 2023 We have walkie talkies that we're too annoying and could be used with wired earphones. I bought them at either Target or Best Buy. I don't know where they are anymore ... we haven't used them in years. We have also tried messaging on the app and we never get the messages because there isn't a notification so have gone back to the notes in the cabin thing. If all else fails, we agree to meet in the cabin around lunchtime, and then around 4 pm. It's also freeing to not feel like you have to carry your phone around!
