fstuff1 Posted April 30, 2023 #1 Share Posted April 30, 2023 (edited) We're headed towards Belfast, Ireland on the Dawn. it's really foggy outside when i looked outside my cabin window at 5am. i hear FAINT blasts of the fog horn. Why don't i hear it much louder, especially since i'm in the fwd section of the ship? Edited April 30, 2023 by fstuff1

You should go out on the top deck and see whether you can stand in front of the fog horn; that will more closely mimic the intended audience for the device.
Rare shof515 Posted April 30, 2023 #3 Share Posted April 30, 2023 it could be possible the fog horn is towards the aft end of the ship. i have been on ships where the horn is by the smoke stack

Maybe because you're sitting three feet away from it in a vehicle with barely any insulating value.

chengkp75 Posted April 30, 2023 #8 Share Posted April 30, 2023 Many ships have two foghorns, one on the forecast (above the bridge on a cruise ship) and one on the main master (above the funnel). They also have a "bell and gong" signal for when anchored. All of these are "directional" to an extent, so that, for instance, the sound is louder away from the ship than it is below the horn. 1
