pvoris01 Posted March 16, 2006 #1 Share Posted March 16, 2006 Is there a good hotel in Ft Lauderdale to stay for our pre-cruise. We would like something on the ocean and not to far from the cruise port.

teddie Posted March 17, 2006 #3 Share Posted March 17, 2006 Wanted to put in a good word for the Marriott Marina. We have stayed there twice, and it's very nice. They had a shuttle (free) to the port also. Last time we stayed there, we bought it on Priceline for $60/nite.
Murphy Posted March 17, 2006 #4 Share Posted March 17, 2006 The Marriott Marina is no longer part of the Marriott chain (or won't be shortly) You can now book it directly at http://www.luxuryresorts.com. It is now the Grande Hotel and Yacht Club. While EggDropErin's list is quite extensive, it doesn't really differentiate between "good" hotels or whether they are on the beach. If you truly want a good hotel on the beach, the only 2 I can recommend are the Marriott Harbor Beach http://www.marriott.com or the Lago Mar. http://www.lagomar.com Both are fabulous resort hotels, but can be pricey. The Lago Mar has some great off season prices, however, and most rooms are suites with at least a mini-kitchen, so some money can be saved eating breakfast in your room. Both have lagoon style pools and great beach facilities. The downside is there really isn't anything within walking distance, so you'll have to taxi it to the Publix for your last minute needs run or dinner out. I don't think either one offers a free shuttle, but both are within minutes to the port, so the taxi ride is minimal $$.
signman Posted March 17, 2006 #5 Share Posted March 17, 2006 Nice list Erin, but at best only 4 of them are on the ocean as the OP requested. Marriott Harbor Beach and Lago Mar are the best of the lot, and closest to the Port. There are pages of information on the Hotels board. Suggest you do some reading there. EggDropErin Posted March 17, 2006 #7 Share Posted March 17, 2006 I know, I know. But I listed all of them just in case some were sold out and they needed other options. And I have never stayed in FL. Just giving them out as a references.
beachlady58 Posted March 17, 2006 #8 Share Posted March 17, 2006 I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Marriott Harbor Beach...Last time I stayed there i paid for a pool view room and got a 2BR/2BA suite fit for a king! They treat you great there and it would be the best way to strt a cruise. I have heard that the Pelican Resort was very nice and Family oriented...but I have stayed at the Harbor Beach 5 or 6 times and it gets better every time. Ask for triple A rate - it is pricey but everyonce in awhile you have to do it!:D
JudithEM Posted March 17, 2006 #9 Share Posted March 17, 2006 I love the Marriott Harbor Beach, but I just stayed in another oceanfront resort last month, just north of the Ft. L. strip -- it's the Pelican Beach Hotel, a Best Western property, and it's brand new (opened just over year). GREAT for large families (our room had 2 kings AND a large oversized chair that pulled out into a bed); also a lazy river; pool; on the beach; ice cream shoppe (the kids loved). PLUS, the entire hotel is no-smoking. Great way to start off a vacation.
smoothdancer Posted March 17, 2006 #10 Share Posted March 17, 2006 Here are our "picture" reviews of the Lago Mar and Yankee Clipper, both on the beach. You will have to click on the Flordia button. http://WWW.JustEatin.com Today I was suprised... I got an Email from the Yankee Clipper advertising rates starting from $230.00. We did not pay near that much in December, and we made our reservation just one day before our arrival. I dont think that this hotel is worth $230.00 Good Luck! The two noted above and a few others on the list are questionable. If you ever come to Florida, do yourself a favor, check out the hotels on your list first before recommending them to friends. :o

CruisinCoach Posted March 18, 2006 #13 Share Posted March 18, 2006 Bequia, Can you please tell me why the Best Western Inn is so undesirable? I booked this hotel before I discovered CC and I have read many posts since, including yours, that mention the area along State Rd 84 is "unsafe." I have read through many posts looking for specifics, but have only seen phrases like "undesirable" and "unsafe." What makes the area so unsafe? Are there drug dealers or gang members hanging out on the corners? Sadly enough, we are from LA, so that may not be that big of a deal for us. It is just a buddy and me, both in our mid 30's, and we booked the hotel because we heard there is a German Restaurant nearby and we are looking forward to Brats and Beer and then just crashing for the night. I value your input but would appreciate more specifics so I can decide if it is worth canceling and booking somewhere else. It is only the one night. Thanks
RedmondCruiser Posted March 18, 2006 #14 Share Posted March 18, 2006 If your asking why the Best Western is undesirable -- I believe that you mean the Best Western Marina ?? Well one good reason is that it is closed and currently set to be torn down. You might want to confirm your reservation. It would'nt be any fun to show up in FLL and find that you have to start looking for a room.
signman Posted March 18, 2006 #15 Share Posted March 18, 2006 Redmond, If you read this thread from the top, then you would know that the Best Western being discussed is on SR 84. Coach, my only knowledge of SR 84 is what I have observed during the morning on visits to Lester's Diner, where I highly recommend the breakfasts. This is what I have observed. It's a local road very intensive with truck repair shops. Nothing on this stretch of the road looks very clean. And in the evening, there very well may be drugs around. But the Holiday Inn Express on this road is supposedly new, so if you are willing to try this area, I say at least go for the HIX. But believe me, I've stayed in worse areas and survived.
