gnucruiser Posted June 14, 2004 #51 Share Posted June 14, 2004 My husband is a carhart shorts or 501 kind of guy and he rented a tux from the ship for our cruise. We got a courtesy measurement done at the local tux shop and faxxed them to Carnival. They tux fit perfectly and his wife (me) was very happy!! lasifguvui5uh Posted June 14, 2004 #52 Share Posted June 14, 2004 Maybe it's just me but I'd rather wear jeans and a T-shirt I bought new than wear "used" clothes someone else who I don't even know has worn....YUCKO!
DebBrown Posted June 14, 2004 #53 Share Posted June 14, 2004 What a sweet story. *wipes tear from eye* The most important thing is that you are comfortable and making that wife of yours happy. I know I wouldn't mind jeans in the dining room on nights other than formal nights. A true gentleman is not measured by what he wears but by how he treats others. I hope you both have a VERY memorable cruise.
GAndie Posted June 14, 2004 #54 Share Posted June 14, 2004 The "used" clothes are cleaned after every use. I think it's more sanitary than putting your face on a pillow that someone else has slobbered on for a week and then only having the pillow case changed, or using a blanket that someone else has used before you...in the best of hotels AND cruise ships. Ya pays ya money and ya takes ya chances!
ljrfrm Posted June 14, 2004 #55 Share Posted June 14, 2004 Well, if you think you might ever wear a tux again, buying one is the way to go. You can get one on e-bay for the price of renting one on the ship. Yes, wearing "used" clothes gives some the eebie-jeebies....but, I'm sure it will be washed well! I think it's very sweet ChuckLL that you're willing to do this for your wife. My dh is not one to like dressing up, hardly ever does. He was hoping I'd want to forgo the formal nights...I told him no such luck So, we're packing up his grey suit for the cruise. He wore a tux for me once when we went to a gala fundraiser, and I love the pictures I have. Your wife will cherish the photos! Now, if only I can get my husband to WANT me to spend money on a new dress! Maybe you can e-mail him, and drop the hint Paradise 6/
InMN253 Posted June 14, 2004 #56 Share Posted June 14, 2004 When formal night rolls around, make sure you stop at as many photo locations as you can. Let them take LOTS of pictures so you have plenty to choose from. After all, if you don't like the photos, you don't have to buy them. Juliah67 Posted June 14, 2004 #57 Share Posted June 14, 2004 Good morning my tight-bunned levi's man......where in Georgia ARE you? How does one survive with no stores? What does your wife do all day if not shop? LOL. Hey, how about suggesting she pick out a nice white gown and your pictures will look similar to wedding pix. And don't forget...the waiter can bring a group over to sing you all "Happy Anniversary" with your dessert. You can order a cake and they also have a place on the ship where they will decorate your room and stuff. You sound like a catch!!!! halos Posted June 14, 2004 #59 Share Posted June 14, 2004 Chuck! I was away for just a weekend, and you went and started another jeans debate!!!! Listen, I think it's amazing that you want to buy your classy wife a nice dress to ensure she looks fabulous when you wear the tux. My advise is DO NOT BUY IT YOURSELF!!!!! Take her shopping. You can go to any department store and get a fabulous dress at the price you quoted OR LESS and she will look stunning!!! Contrary to what men believe, it isn't that expensive for a dress..it's the accessories that are painful....shoes, getting hair and nails done, etc..... Dressing a man costs a lot more, usually. You can get a stunning affordable dress at the mall that will look great with a tux...BUT LET HER SHOP FOR IT!!!!!! As for your 'suffering' in a monkey suit...PLEASE give up the drama on that. Once you put that tux on and see how absolutely stunning you look, you will feel more comfortable than you have ever felt in your life. Now...go shopping with your wife and please don't pack any jeans. I believe in Miracles MIRACLE JUNE 19, 2004 Calm Seas, Good Friends

katondeck Posted June 14, 2004 #61 Share Posted June 14, 2004 3 positive things 1. When my Dh and I were going to see a show on Broadway for the first time we were told "you can wear anything in NY as long as it is black". I had lots of nice dresses, but none in black. I was really busy at work and did not have time to go shopping. MY DH came home a day before we were leaving with 3 black dresses for me to pick from. Therefore I think buying a dress for your wife is a GREAT idea. 2. I am glad you are concidering the tux, I got a great buy on e-bay for both his tux and shirt, less than renting. I also have not heard anyone complain that the renting thing did not work out. 3. I don't know when you are leaving but, what about renewing your vows on the ship? It would be the closest thing she could ever have to "formal" wedding pictures and cuuld be a really sweet surprise for your wife. Good Luck! peanutprincess1977 Posted June 14, 2004 #62 Share Posted June 14, 2004 It is soooo sweet you want to get her a dress. Do the tux thing. And then for the other nights, just get some nice khakis and only wear them to dinner. Leave right after and change. My guy won't dress up either. But khakis just look so nice. Bag the tie, get some nice button downs (oh so sexy) and your dockers. You make her happy and you only got to suffer through dinner before you go change the outfit. TomD Posted June 14, 2004 #64 Share Posted June 14, 2004 Chuck, If it's not the genes issue with your wife, it's the jeans issue with you Look on the bright side, if you get bring a tux (or suit, or any other clothing) with you for the first formal, you can use that instead of those dirty pillows Remember the weight gain factor on a cruise? LornaT Posted June 14, 2004 #65 Share Posted June 14, 2004 Chuck, No one has mentioned this but not only can you rent a tux for yourself, but they have an outfit that you could rent for your wife, less expensive then buying a dress and if she doesn't like it she doesn't wear it. Check out the Carnival website for the information,.
bjkeen Posted June 14, 2004 #66 Share Posted June 14, 2004 No way that I'd wear jean in the dining room. I heard a family being told "not to wear jeans to the dining room again" they were told that they were only allowed to stay because it was the first night of the cruise, but they would not be allowed access the other nights if they wore jeans. I was embarassed for them. ChuckLL Posted June 14, 2004 Author #67 Share Posted June 14, 2004 Thanks for all of the input. She checked out the local store today. They didn't have anything in stock at this time, but they did tell her about another store in town that she had never heard of that may have something. Just to touch on a view things... LornaT, I didn't know the CL had female formal rentals. I may check it out. I do have ulterior motives for BUYING a dress though. Yep, TomD, genes and jeans have seemed to be my thing haven't they? On the plus side, I noticed today that all of this "worriation" has made the time until the cruise seem to slip by faster. bjkeen, that would indeed embarrass most people. Iy wouldn't be so bad for me though. I'm a professional land surveyor. I've got experience with being asked to leave the premises/property. Atleast the dining room staff wouldn't be doing the asking with a shotgun in the hands. To all of those with the "sweet" and "nice" adjectives describing me: I appreciated it, but remember beneath it all still beats the heart of one of those mean, evil men folks. I know full well that I'm the one lucky to have her. Not the other way around.
Rare dickinson Posted June 15, 2004 #68 Share Posted June 15, 2004 Just so you know, I think the womens formal wear you can rent on the ship is a female version of a tux because it was a black pant outfit. CLDS Posted June 15, 2004 #69 Share Posted June 15, 2004 Chuck, I notice you live in Georgia. If you live near Marietta or Atlanta K&G mens store has tuxs for $99. You can get the shirt and all the trimmings for $20 and shoes for about the same. They do alterations in the store. I bought tuxs for my sons for our cruise. One of them needed lots of alterations on the pants and jacket and that was about $20. We had someone measure them and help size them. It was quick, easy, cheap, and painless. I can't wait to have their pictures taken. Cheryl PS The Marietta store is only open Fri, Sat, & Sun. Not sure about Atlanta.
