Rare mil76 Posted June 6 Author #101 Share Posted June 6 (edited) Ok, back to Madeira. Queue ended up being about 45 minutes. While waiting we alternated checking out the sights in the area. Edited June 6 by mil76
Rare mil76 Posted June 6 Author #102 Share Posted June 6 Then it was our turn. Like any other ride, your end up at a gift shop. We then walked the rest of the way into town. It is all.downhill, but it is very steep so your legs get sore. We wore our hiking sneakers with lugs so it was a much easier walk since they gripped the asphalt better than flat tennis shoes. Passed the cool bridge we could see from the ship.
Rare mil76 Posted June 6 Author #103 Share Posted June 6 I know some.people say the tobogans are a rip-off, but we enjoyed it. It was €35 (finally figured out how to do the pounds and euro symbols on my phone), but I have spent more on far worse experiences.
Rare mil76 Posted June 6 Author #104 Share Posted June 6 Once in town, we went to the market to get lunch. Had to try the Espetadas. They were just OK, but I think it was just the restaurant we went to. But once we left the market, we got these pasteles de nata across the street. These lived up to every bit of the hype. Can't wait to get to Lisbon to have more of them!
Rare mil76 Posted June 6 Author #105 Share Posted June 6 Then we headed through the center of town towards the ship.
Rare mil76 Posted June 6 Author #106 Share Posted June 6 Made a final stop at the CR7 museum. Pretty impressive when your trophy cabinet is a museum! This one was painful for me. If only John Terry would have converted that penalty....
Rare mil76 Posted June 6 Author #107 Share Posted June 6 (edited) Made it back to the ship with the only rain being while we were in the CR7 museum. It stopped long enough for us to get back to the ship. As soon as the ship left it started pouring rain. Another perfect DIY port stop! Rare mil76 Posted June 6 Author #108 Share Posted June 6 Crystal block arrived. Figures they give us this on the cruise where we don't have any weight to spare in the suitcases.

My take is that if you enjoyed it and were comfortable with the price then it's money well spent and not a rip-off. I'm glad you had fun doing it. 😊 Madeira is one of my favourite places and I always suggest the baskets when someone asks me what there is to do there.

One of our crystal blocks came when we were flying and didn’t think we would have room. Later in the cruise we were talking to a couple who told us that they were on their honeymoon. We gave the block to them and they were thrilled.

Unfortunately for me, I'll lug this thing home and then my youngest son will take it. He has been cruising since he was 18 months old (almost 22 now) and he collects the blocks as well as as the ones they sell in the shops on board. He was with us on Anthem last time we cruised her. I saw that the ones in the shop are now 60 bucks! Glad I don't have to buy those anymore.

Rare mil76 Posted June 7 Author #115 Share Posted June 7 Walked to the market, and had some snacks. Some of the best olives I've ever had.
Rare mil76 Posted June 7 Author #116 Share Posted June 7 Then FW did some jewelry shopping in the market. After this we headed to the auditorium and "castle"
Rare mil76 Posted June 7 Author #117 Share Posted June 7 Since we walked here, it basically doubled our distance for the day. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are really trying to get some steps in. You can see it from the ship anyway. Headed back along a bike/pedestrian path until we reached the port. We ended up doing over 15000 steps today. We didn't see any activities In Tenerife that we really wanted to do. It seems the most common excursions were beach day, whale/dolphin watching, and mountains. I think if we would not have walked all the way to the auditorium it would have been a much better day, as we are now really sore from the past few days of extensive walking.

Rare mil76 Posted June 7 Author #119 Share Posted June 7 Remerged from my nightly hibernation tonight. In the Music Hall now while FW tries to end the losing streak. Rhythmocracy's early set was still 70s love songs but the later set is much better. First 3 songs were Oasis, Incubus and Coldplay.
heatherb1958 Posted June 8 #120 Share Posted June 8 @mil76 - have visited Funchal countless times and done island tours plus the cable car, refuse to do the basket 😂. One of my favourite places to visit is Santa Maria Street, very famous for it's painted doors, looks like walking through an art gallery with pavement cafes/restaurants/a few shops. If ever you are back there ...

Rare mil76 Posted June 8 Author #122 Share Posted June 8 Today we went to Las Canteras beach. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from the port. Started off very cloudy, and we thought we were going to regret not bringing umbrellas. But it soon started to clear and we ended up with great weather. We walked quite a bit on the Promenade, supposedly it's 3K end to end. I think it's better going north (right) if you walk straight though town and reach the beach. They had a 10K today which finished at La Puntilla which is the very northern end, so that area was pretty crowded. I think we have done a 10K every day of this trip!
Rare mil76 Posted June 8 Author #123 Share Posted June 8 Our lovely view of the industrial side of the port has the new cruise terminal which is under construction. I saw a sign on the way in claiming this is going to be the largest cruise terminal in Europe.

We were in Barcelona last year, our tour guide said that when the work there is finished they would be able to accommodate NINE cruise ships together,I wouldn't want to be there when it happens it was bad enough with five! We did take umbrellas and ended up not needing them. What we did regret not bringing were beach towels. We ended up buying one at one of the shops beside the beach! 😂
