Portland is a great cruise port! I wanted to do all of the excursions and visit all of the places.  Last cruise I did the excursion to Corfe castle and this cruise I spent the day in Weymouth.

 

What a day it was!

 

If you enjoy shopping, thrifting or beaching this is the spot!

 

Even though it was a Monday and not a weekend things were bustling in this beautiful English seaside town.

 

The shuttle drops passengers off slightly out of town and you walk over the swinging bridge to get to the Main Street and the beach 

 

 

This is the place assistant cruise director Rachael recommends. I popped in but it smelled like fish so I had to leave.

The candy shops in the UK bring me so much joy, even when I’m just looking and not buying.

I didn’t have breakfast or coffee on the ship so needed some nourishment ashore. 
 

The waitress at the cafe asked me if I wanted my coffee white. I had no idea what that meant so I said does that mean with cream and she said no we don’t have cream.

 

I can’t eat runny, closer to raw than cooked eggs so asked them to put these on the griddle a little longer. This bread and butter was NOT delicious Irish Soda bread with delicious Irish butter.

I assumed when I saw tomato included that it would be fresh, sliced tomato. These were hot, boiled and skinless.

 

 

 

 

I’m not sure I selected the best place. The food wasn’t great and the portions were way too big.

As you get closer to the beach the houses switch to guest houses, all with “No Vacancy” signs and the quaint shops give way to arcades and casinos.

King George III summered in Weymouth. In those days children could frolic in the ocean but adults didn’t. King George’s doctor prescribed swimming to heal his ailments so a bathing carriage was built. He was wheeled out into the ocean by horses or people and could change and swim in there.

After 5 hours of walking I crossed back over the bridge, turned right instead of left (into a neighbourhood and away from the touristy areas) and found a church and a well-placed advertisement for a pub up a hill. Up I went!

The pub did not disappoint!

I loved it here. The owner and his friends bought the place last year when it was run-down and falling apart. They fixed it up and put all the museum-type items on display.  All owners have other jobs and operate this as a co-op with profits going back into the pub so it can remain a neighbourhood gathering place.

I am a big Beatles fan but this is the first time I am seeing photos of a Helter Skelter. Very interesting! So what is inside? A slide and you use a mat?

 

Yvonne, as always your photos are so vivid, so fabulous! I linger on every shot. My faves are the flowers, dogs and cats but every pic is so special. Thank you for sharing.

 

What is a stick of rock? And a white coffee?

 

As an American it’s tough for me to see baked beans and what looks like a boiled tomato on a breakfast plate. I just think of them as lunch or dinner items. But every country has their way of doing things.

 

(I know cruisers from various countries are reading these threads.Not for nothing but even though I am proud of my country’s standings in the Olympic medal department I really need to congratulate the UK, France and Australia who are doing very well and have much smaller populations. (UK -67 million; France -65 million; Australia- 27 million. US- 340 million) Congrats to all! Like this thread of Yvonne’s it’s nice having something to bring us all together.)

Oh wait! Actually when I was walking into the main part of Weymouth before crossing the  bridge the ferries had signs up that they weren’t operating today due to the high winds. 
 

It didn’t seem that windy to me but I’m not an anemometer.

@Eleanor Rigby 14 just when you say I’m bringing people together, I go and order pizza with pineapple. Few topics are more divisive than whether or not pineapple belongs on pizza. 

 

This is my favourite pizza. Cheese and pineapple.

 

I also like Hawaiian pizza without the ham.

 

I used my second casual dining meal at Alfredo’s tonight. I didn’t feel like sushi. I really enjoyed the meal at Alfredo’s. I had a window seat, the pizza was perfect, the restaurant staff were great and there were only three occupied tables so it was quiet. I figured out that music doesn’t play in the Piazza during the Good Spirits presentation so I ate then.

 

There are only two desserts in Alfredo’s and tiramisu is not my favourite so I tried the apple tart. The custard on the plate was good and the apple slices were good but the pastry was eggy and I think they microwaved it because it was super hot but this curdled the eggs so the whole dessert tasted like scrambled eggs with apple. Don’t even get me started on the icing sugar.

I don’t have anything on my list! This is our last port and I ran out of research time. All suggestions are welcome except for those involving meat.

That was a photo of the library in Honfleur.

 

The Normandy region is known for Calvados (apple brandy), caramel and an endless array of cheese.

 

And crepes...savory and sweet!
