CaptainChoppers Posted April 9, 2006 #1 Share Posted April 9, 2006 We are taking the NCL Dawn 6/17/06 cruise out of NY. Very curious about the AE Penthouse Suite that we booked. Does anyone have a picture of this room, and do you think that if we asked for an up-grade to AC or AD Penthouse that it would be worth it. First, you're not going to get an upgrade (free) to go to a higher penthouse. You can ask for an upsell to those categories. Upsells will happen after final payments has been made. You can call the upsell desk at 1 800 625-4309. At the end of my post clink on the link to Lastingtouch pics. They are of an AA Owner's Suite and and AE 9236 on the Dawn. lillibean Posted April 9, 2006 #3 Share Posted April 9, 2006 Sorry, I've got no clue about the penthouses...but I just wanted to say that my family and I are going to be on the Dawn on 6/17/06 as well =)
CaptainChoppers Posted April 9, 2006 Author #4 Share Posted April 9, 2006 Thanks, Monty! You've been very helpful. Your pictures were great. I have a couple of questions: We noticed that there were anniversary decorations in your suite. Was this part of the Anniversary Package that they offer? Also, we booked this cruise thru Casino At Sea. We faxed them a copy of our Borgata Black Label Card. We had originally gone thru our TA and she had a mini-suite AF for us if we wanted it. However, Casino At Sea offers an 18% discount so we were able to book the Penthouse AE 8170 for a little less than it would have cost us for the mini-suite! Do you think that we should inquire about an up-grade thru the Casino at Sea or do we do it thru the 800 number for NCL. Thanks for all your help:)
CarlNcl Posted April 10, 2006 #5 Share Posted April 10, 2006 I have had an AE on the end of the boat twice and really liked it. I've looked at the higher level rooms at the front of the boat and they do not have the nice view out the slider doors. They have single large steel door in case a freak wave hits. (Think water tight doors like you see in movies.) I would also think wind would be much more of a factor. The 20 knot spped of the ship alone would creat a relative wind. This is all conjecture on my part, if you are serious you should ask for someone who has stayed in the category. IMO you have to go to AB or higher to get better then an AE. Although AD on the end would be ok and is the same as AE but up on deck 10. Note that your B&O TV does have a DVD player in it. I liked it better then the flat panel on the Jewel. They don't have an HD signal on the boat so it's not a very good pic for a 16:9 format. Since you are inside 75 day final payment you could call NCL and ask for the upsell desk. Check what rooms are still available using the NCL site. I see lots of AD thru AAs. Careful not to select or they go out of inventory for a short time. Can you explain more about how the "Casino at Sea" program works and give a web site or phone?
POOHISME2 Posted April 10, 2006 #6 Share Posted April 10, 2006 I booked Dawn AE 8670 11/26 and was very disappointed last night to find out that the balcony does not wrap around the edge of the ship and it is very narrow. Any info/opinions on this cabin choice? I am now considering moving over one cabin (only AE left) or taking an AE guarantee or upgrading to a higher suite category (at a much higher price). I really don't want to be in the front of the ship in December, bad part of taking a guarantee? Any help or suggestions? I too noticed the best suites from where we are in AE is AB or above :(. A great pic of the Dawn is in one of the replies:http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=259015 I had #10226 (starboard corner) on my last Dawn trip. Next time, I'd take the cabin next door. The balcony was fine, but did narrow in the corner.
Mrmacman Posted April 10, 2006 #9 Share Posted April 10, 2006 I was in Dawn AE 8170 in January. It was the best part of my trip. Loved the cabin, loved the view. The balcony is MORE than large enough. It was nice an quiet and I adored watching the wake. You will love the cabin.

It is a bummer that it is not as deep and does not wrap (same on Jewel and probably Pearl). I thought about it and decided I liked not having people on both sides of me more then the deeper deck. There is plenty of room for two long chairs, just not depth on one side. Star Corner AE looking out: Jewel corner AE looking toward ship:

We upgraded to AD 10228. 12 days on the ship, i want a big balcony:D Take care of AD 10228 for us, we cruise in that cabin on 2/18/07. I've heard bad things about the mattress pad in 10228 from seahorse, so check under the bedding before you sleep on it.... Here is the link to her evaluation of 10228, check out the second post in the thread for cabin info... http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=306355&page=4 I'm hoping everything has been fixed/cleaned by now. Trobrah Posted April 11, 2006 #15 Share Posted April 11, 2006 Hi, My wife and I were on the Dawn 3/16 sailing and were lucky enough to have gotten an upsell from 10230 to 10228. The balcony on 10230 was actually larger but 10228 was 130 sf larger inside. We also got Carmen, Alex L'Occitane goodies and a bunch of other things. I read Seahorse's review and looked for all the negative things she mentioned about the cabin. The only thing she mentioned that I noticed was the "sticky carpet", which in reality turned out to the carpet pulling away from the subflorring. Not a big issue to us and my wife thinks I am fairly anal. After a few evening libations it made no difference whether the mattress was soft of firm. The subtle rocking of the ship and the sound of the wake through the open balcony door were were mesmerizing. Feel fortunate that you have a wonderful cabin and hopefully Carmen and Alex will still be there. Jay

Now if only they would put the portable phones in the AD cabins I would be great, I was spoiled in the AB suite last time.
