risa00 Posted April 12, 2006 #1 Share Posted April 12, 2006 My husband is claustrophobic and he's currently scheduled to do the Helicopter and Extended Glacier Trek. We've had problems with his phobia on other trips like not getting in a helicopter, not scuba diving, almost not getting in a gondola, etc. I don't plan on paying $350 when I know that he won't be able to do the excursion. What are some fun and adventurous excursions in Juneau that wouldn't require a helicopter or floatplane? FYI, we live in the Northwest so we've done the whale watching and he's doing kayaking at another stop. Oh, and we're going end of May. Thanks! Budget Queen Posted April 12, 2006 #2 Share Posted April 12, 2006 The downtown area is loaded with history, once you get past the shops. :) I am a strong advocate of walking tours which can offer a great opportunity. Maps are available at the dock visitor center, but there are also walking tour suggestions in Fodor's Alaska and Frommer's Alaska. Head to your library and perhaps copy the pages. hotmike98 Posted April 12, 2006 #3 Share Posted April 12, 2006 There's a group canoe trip across Mendenhall Lake which goes as close as allowed to the face of the glacier. Don't confuse this with the "float trip" which follows the current OUT of the lake downstream, and thus does not get nearly as close to the glacier. suron Posted April 12, 2006 #4 Share Posted April 12, 2006 We are on Dawn Princess RTSeattle on May 27th and have opted for a bus trip to the Mendenhall Glacier which combines a Salmon Bake with it. It starts at 2pm and lasts around 4hrs so this will enable us to have time to explore the town when we get back, take a trip on the Mt Roberts Tramway (which is open until 9pm) and relax a bit before sailing at about 10pm Hope you have success in planning what you want to do. NHCruisr Posted April 12, 2006 #5 Share Posted April 12, 2006 We're going on June 5 on the Coral Princess. We've booked excursions on the other port days but are doing our own thing in Juneau. There are excellent suggestions from the Juneau visitors bureau. Just google the site. The last time we were there, we found much to see within walking distance...stores, museum, restaurants, etc. There are also inexpensive shuttles to Mendenhall which has just a small admission price. We did the green shuttle up to Mendenhall Glacier last year. $5 per person each way and you can stay up there as long as you want. Brief city tour on way to glacier. Lots of hiking. Keep an eye on the bergs in Mendenhall Lake. When they roll over its a clear blue ice - incredible. Had plenty of time to explore town and tram ride. We were in port from 2pm to 10 pm.
