luvtocruise52 Posted April 20, 2006 #1 Share Posted April 20, 2006 Somewhere I saw a reference to swimming with turtles in Cozumel. Does anyone know anything about this? We've been to Cozumel several times and would like to do something different.
cozgal Posted April 20, 2006 #2 Share Posted April 20, 2006 Many people swim with the sea turtles while diving...I do not think that there are any structured programs as sea turtles are a protected species.
ScubaMare Posted April 21, 2006 #3 Share Posted April 21, 2006 I do not think that there are any structured programs as sea turtles are a protected species. All I can say is, let's hope that's true. If you've ever been diving and seen a beautiful sea turtle nestled under some coral "asleep," there's no way you'd want to disturb such peaceful creatures. Keep in mind, when you touch sea creatures you're not only exposed to their bacteria but they're exposed to yours. I'll not get on my soapbox about these structured "swim with" programs because I have participated in one. Had I known then what I know now about these programs I never would have contributed to their financial success. :(
luvtocruise52 Posted April 21, 2006 Author #4 Share Posted April 21, 2006 Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll have to take some scuba lessons before we cruise! To this point, I've just been snorkeling, but have seen some amazing sights.
ScubaMare Posted April 28, 2006 #5 Share Posted April 28, 2006 You can do a Discover Scuba course while you're there. You'll learn the basics and get to do a shallow dive. Most dive shops down there offer them. It's how we got HOOKED!!! Did Discover Scuba when we were down there for a week and wound up going all the way and taking the PADI Cert. Course and getting certified. PRETTY AWESOME!!!
bruce-r Posted April 28, 2006 #6 Share Posted April 28, 2006 This is how close turtles sometimes get to you when you scuba dive: and Actually, he was a lot closer, so close the camera didn't have time to focus. And I didn't touch the turtle either.
