Destination Alaska 2006 Coupon Book - Here's What's Inside

I’m not going to Alaska until July 2007 but was curious about what coupons are in the Destination Alaska 2006 coupon book. Normally the book is FREE if you get it at the pier – but since I’m not going until next year I went to their website - http://www.destinationalaska.com/order.html - and ordered a copy for $5.00 shipping. I received the book today and wanted to pass on what’s inside.

When I started to compile the list to post here I didn’t realize HOW MANY things there were – but once I started I didn’t want to stop – so several hours later – here is the list. I hit on all the major ones. I’m going to split up the list into separate posts so that it fits.

Thx! Printed out as 6 pgs. Can't believe you spent all that time. [Would have taken me 3 days!] I hadn't even heard of this book but will now study & highlite what we may be interested in. Have read here that we may even get end of season prices!

Cheryl,

Thanks for the wonderful list. Question - Do you need coupons from the book for these deals or are these the regular prices?

You do need to get your hands on the book. There are a few that don't need coupons (Everyday Specials) but most do require a coupon.

I'm not sure if they pass it out at all the embarkation points. Well worth the $5.00 I paid and it guarantees you a book. I'm going to reorder for 2007. The coupons all appear to expire the end of September.

I see there are several coupons for black diamonds... Does anyone know what black diamonds are? Are they real? And if so, is there some special correlation between Alaska and black diamonds? Will there be a good selection of black diamond jewelry in Alaska?

Thanks for the quick reply, Budget Queen. We're sailing out of Seattle.

Dianne

Dianne, I've looked for the Destination Alaska coupon books on our 3 previous cruises out of Seattle but they didn't have them. :(

Cheryl, how long did it take for you to get your book?

Not long - I ordered at the beginning of March and didn't receive it until yesterday - BUT - I did call last week and they told me they were just waiting on the latest and greatest. The woman I spoke with said that normally it only takes a week or two once they get them from the printer.

A. You are an angel to put in all that work to share with us.

B. The stores should all send you something free for their free publicity.

C. I am already compling a list based on your work. Thanks! I didn't expect the jackets and such to be made in Alaska. Most everything is made in China now and I love the idea of a fleece jacket from Alaska. Will probably get an Ulu knife too!

Cheers!

Michelle

I'm heading south - does Whittier have the books?

Yes, Whittier has them!:) Each in my family was handed one, for a total of 4. There were stacks of them available when we sailed. Thank you for compiling this list!! I've enjoyed reading it in order to pre-select a few items;). I'm pretty picky about purchases, but expect the stuffed animals that I bring home for little ones to be imports.

Something of interest:

Ketchikan-

available at any Tongass Trading Triangle Store :

Deluxe ULU, Block & Bowl Set - $24.99 (reg. $34.99)

This is a good purchase, cheaper than the factory price by a few dollars. If I'm not mistaken, this is the Ulu Factory set which is made in Anchorage, AK.

A very nice set. I use mine nearly every day. Be aware, there are cheap ones, practically given away, and yes, they're 'made in China'.

AmbiBambi, I found this answer to your "black diamonds" question on another thread:

Hematite is called Alaska black diamonds here simply because it's black and shiny. It actually has very little value as a stone, and is quite soft. Real diamonds which are black are thought by most reputable gemologists to be a fad that will be short-lived ( http://www.blackdiamonds.co.uk/ )

Murray

You have probably seen hematite jewelry before. It is black but has a silver sheen. I think that the prices in the coupon book are right in line with what you should pay for hematite - it is a very cheap and common stone (though pretty).

Well... I decided to hop over to the Tongass Trading Post site to check out the ulu set, and indeed, they are Ulu Factory:). I will be shipping a few home for future gifts.

While there, I ran across this. I can see why it might be a bargain... I'm not sure I'd want it on my fridge, unless of course, I needed a conversation starter.:D

Anyway, thanks again for the list!... the time you took proves you are definitely addicted to researching your upcoming cruise!!!

Oh do tell! What kind of knife is this? We won't be hitting Ketchican, would Skagway or Juneau have these? My kitchen has tons of cool tools and if I can add another while we are there, that would be a bonus!

Thanks - I think I'll stillorder me a new one next year - just so I have an idea what I want to look for - also just in case.

FYI - When I have a cuircular or in this case a coupon book - that I want to find the coupon quickly I number my list with the page number in the book so I can find it quicker.

Anyway, thanks again for the list!... the time you took proves you are definitely addicted to researching your upcoming cruise!!!
You got that right - my DH calls me OBSESSED - I don't find that to be a bad word at all - but he on the other hand says it is.

I love this set... it's similar to the mezzaluna knife, with the chopping block conforming to the curve of the blade.

Here's a link to the set I looked up at Tongass:

http://tongasstrading.com/detail.aspx?ID=438&projectID=1&CategoryID=74

A link to the ULU FACTORY: http://www.theulufactory.com/

There are hundreds of variations. ALL ports will have them, and some are very unique. Hand made ones often have handles made of antler, bone, etc. Some are made of jade. Some are very cheap 'made in china', some very expensive intricately handcarved.

I really like this knife and bowl from Galligaskins: http://www.galligaskins.com/legend.htm

they are sold seperately, and I'm still considering whether to purchase a set or not. I don't NEED it, I just WANT it.:)

Some people don't like them, but once I got the hang of using it, chopping is fast and easy. There are videos for sale also, demonstrating the use of ulus.

Hope this answers some questions. I can't think of a better souvenir than an Alaskan made ulu... mass produced (less expensive) or hand carved (more expensive).
