joedi Posted April 28, 2006 #1 Share Posted April 28, 2006 We're headed off in early June, on Volendam, for Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan. Our preference on other cruises has been to book independent tours in advance, or set off on our own, but we've never been to Alaska. We'd be appreciative of suggestions. swdke Posted April 28, 2006 #2 Share Posted April 28, 2006 We're headed off in early June, on Volendam, for Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan. Our preference on other cruises has been to book independent tours in advance, or set off on our own, but we've never been to Alaska. We'd be appreciative of suggestions. Your cruise will be here before you know it, and you've come to the best source for information. Best advice is to review and go through all the messages and replies on this board, and you'll find all there is to see and do. But, I'll quickly share some ideas based on what we did. In Ketchikan, we walked to the local musuem, took in the lumberjack show, walked around town, and visited the Salmon hatchery. For a paid tour, we went with Lois of Classic Tours. She was a lot of fun, but it's just her, so she only does one maybe two tours a day. You'll have to contact her to see if she has availability. In Juneau we rented a car to take in the Mendenhall glacier on our own, and visited the salmon hatchery and Alaskan Brewery. Also in town, there's the tram which was fun too. In Skagway, we rented a car and drove to Carcross. That was a great and beautiful experience. Also, before we drove, we took the National Park tour of the town which was excellent. On our way out of town, we visited the cemetary, it too was very interesting. That's some of what we did to get you started on ideas, but everyone on this board is extremely helpful and informative. Just do some research on this board and you'll discover more ideas than you can fit in your days. Have fun, Alaska is wonderful.
Budget Queen Posted April 29, 2006 #3 Share Posted April 29, 2006 Yes, take some time and read back on this board. Also, look over a shore excursion list and narrow down your interests. Budget Fully. Then post specific questions- you'll get the accurate information. :)
