Passport in Ports?

Do you have to carry your passport (or DL & birth certificate) off the ship in the ports of call? We are planning to snorkel in all 3 ports during our upcoming W. Caribbean cruise.... just wondering if we need all this ID to get back on the ship, or if our S&S cards and maybe driver's licenses would suffice.

Thanks!

Your S&S is all you really need to get back on board.

However, if you run into difficulties (miss the ship, traffic ticket, in the wrong place at the wrong time, etc.) you will be happy to have the original passport and probably a credit card.

A photocopy will help the American Consulate help you when they are open (first thing tomorrow morning, Señor). Until then you may be considered an illegal alien. The following post may be of interest. It is specific to the island of Barbados, but brings out some good points.

Right after 9/11 we needed phot ID in addition to the ships card to enter the port area. In the last two years though no one has ever asked for additional ID, although we always carry copies of our passports and when we are off the ship just in case.
