Legend of the Seas tips

Hi Carol good to see you back on the boards.Thank you for the review of Legend,we will be sailing on her next Wednesday, and I can't wait.I only hope our cruise is half as good as your review suggests anything else will be a bonus.Did you take any wine onboard either at Southampton or at any of the other ports,if so,did you take any to the dining room and how much was the corkage?Once again thanks for the review.

Hi MG...Thanks so very much for the welcome home. It was truly a wonderful cruise...well worth the years' wait. Many, many finishing touches have been added on last year..just little things.. But they made the journey even more special. I am sure you will enjoy Legend and have a wonderful cruise. I will be thinking of you on Wednesday...is it Madeira and the Canary Islands you visit? that will be really beautiful. I sure miss the med sunshine more than anything. Just such a feeling of well being. Very cloudy and cool here in derby. All I can suggest.. is to enjoy every single minute. I tried so hard..I couldn't bring myself to sleep..kept putting the eyedrops in to hide the red eyes. I am Still trying to catch up on sleep now.

Sorry about the wine..I seldom drink it. My husband normally does..but didn't biring any along. so I don't know what RC policy is.. or the cork charge.

'If you saw the ton of luggage we had..you'd understand why we couldn't carry any! lol... Liquor bought in gibralter..was kept in our cabin until we reached home. Have a fantastic cruise..wish I were going again... I look forward to hearing from you.. on your return. Best wishes always, Carol

Hi Everyone!

We're very excited to have booked our 2nd cruise ever .. first with RC .. we sail on Dec. 30th.

I loved ready the tips last time in the carnival pages about 'what they don't tell you' and was wondering if they had anything for Legend of the Seas? One of the things specifically was .. on carnival if you didn't like what was for dinner you could order a plain steak. Does anyone know if you can do this on RC ships?

Also, we are bringing our daughter with us this time, so if anyone has any tips for a 6 year old/family vacation they'd be most appreciated as well!

thanks!

My DD were on the Legend in Feb. and loved it! She is 12 and couldn't wait to go to Adventure Ocean. I definitely would suggest getting to the port by 11:00 so you can get onto the ship early, probably around 11:30. This gives you the feeling of having a whole extra day of cruising.

My Legend "secrets":

Where is your cabin? If it is aft and port side, there is a little known stairwell that leads from the cabins on deck 8 up into the Spa which will give you quick access to the Solarium for Pizza snacking!

Befriend the bartenders in the Solarium bar and make nice with the Pizza guy. After a couple days of chatting with them both regarding the pizza topping selections (or lack their of...) The pizza guy (Sergio I think) asked what we wanted. He said he couldn't make it then, but would defrost the ingredients and make it for us the next day. We went in for lunch and he had just finished it. Bunches of people asked us what was on in and Sergio told them it was a special pizza for Mr. Ray! :) Made us feel special for sure!

The wait staff is fab on the Legend. When I asked the head waiter about a dessert that was pictured on the dessert menu but never seemed to be served, she told me they only served it in Alaska, as it was made of toffee and the toffee wouldn't set up in the Caribbean. But then she asked us our cabin numbers and delivered the dessert to everyone at our table's cabin the next night as a surprise!

Have a great time!

Thanks for all the info Carol! I was wondering what ports you visited this summer in the Med? I am looking at doing the Eastern Med and Greece next July. (It's our 20 year anniversary and I miss Europe too much!)

Did you leave from Civitavecchia? Did you go to Rome early or the day of the cruise? I would like to go a few days early and explore Rome with DH- since I have been to Rome in '86 I know a bit. How hard was it to get from Rome to the ship? How long did it take? Any must sees while in port?

Also very interested in the Santiago departure in Dec. for Legend. Anyone know much aobut that? I would think that would be a nice port.... Anybody have info?

Thanks for any info you can send my way! Gabrielle:rolleyes:

Hi Gabrielle..great to hear from you. We had a brilliant cruise..2x in Med. on Legend....and both cruises very different. Even though many ports were repeated. We chose just a slight variation on last year. We had our children along this time..and we loved what we saw last year.So knew a bit of what to do this time.

Firstly, we sailed 2005 and 2006 both from Southampton.Where Legend has been UK based the past 2 summer seasons. she is being replaced by Navigator next year. We are, however, booked again on Legend for 2007..(Aug 11th) sailing from Civitevecchia...for the Italian/croatia itinerary.. featuring Venice and Livorno (Florence/Pisa) both ports with a 2 day stopover. Which is extremely rare...plus Portofino.Naples..sicily...and Dubrovnik and split in Croatia. We are going to Rome.....as you say.. a couple days early...Our TA says it is too early to book the rooms at present ...10 months before is when they start making offers. However,

Last year, Rome was one of the ports of call. We took the classic Med. itinerary..so I do know a bit about the distance.

Our route last year.. was Praia del rocha (The algarve in Portugal...) Gibralter..Rome...Villefranche..(Monte Carlo/Nice)...Corsica..Barcelona..Vigo in spain.. and Lisbon. All the ports were beautiful..We mostly toured ourselves..arrivals were early..departures around 5 or 6..except Villefranche at midnight. when we had a fantastic deck party as we departed..with all the harbour lit around us..and fireworks going off.

the port of Civitevecchia.. is about 90 minutes from Rome. We took the Rome on Your own excursion from the ship last year. Basically, it took us to the city in comfort... and very conveniently dropped us off in front of the Vatican. We had around 5 hrs to tour the city at our pace..and then meet up again for the return. We thoroughly enjoyed the day. Seeing most of the major sites.. Although we didn't tour any interiors..of the basilica etc..as the lines were long. It was especially momentous for me..as I had last been to rome as a 21 year old..34 years before. With my parents. Quite Scary! but Seemed like yesterday! wonderful to be able to return..and once again cruise. It was a lot less glamourous...the ship I sailed on then.

.

As I understand it..Next summer..Legend has a shuttle that transfers you from the airport..to the ship. It can be adopted to A hotel for transfer as well. We found this itnerary..and prices..only advertised with RC on their website..first appearing in May. It never has been publicly advertised with the TA's here in the UK. But seems to be mainly promoted in the USA..although the captain did bring it up onboard this cruise...during the cocktail party onboard...and the question and answer session..on the last day. It seemed to come as a surprise to most..that Legend was sailing out of Italy. He is from Greece..Captain Nik..and happilly invited everyone sailing the Greek itinerary....back to his house. so make sure you take him up on that offer! LOL. We told our TA about this cruise....she had no information...and put a deposit in May. she could only quote the RC prices..(normally the TA negotiate their own deal).....but did offer us airfare..and a guarantee transfer to the ship..for little over a £100 each. RC wanted around £350. each. So we have gone with that offer. Now like you.... we hope to get rooms for a couple of days pre cruise..so we can see Rome. she has assured us she can access the same accommodations acceptable to the cruiseline and on the shuttle route. So we are safely transferred to the ship. We have had good luck with her the past 2 cruises..so fingers crossed. If you have booked through a TA..check all this with them. Keep in touch...and let me know how you get on.

This cruise we returned from last saturday..visited..Gibralter...where we had a wonderful tour of all the rock..the caves with many unusual formations..and the famous monkeys..who sat on our shoulder for photos. Not always recommended..but they did behave. thanks to a careful guide. We had only had a couple hrs last time.so this stop was great. We also had several hours for shopping and seeing the area. The Queen Mary 2 was at anchor next to us. Quite a sight. Next stop was Barcelona..where we stopped overnight and had a wonderful party on deck at midnight..with Tapas and Sangria flowing. I really enjoyed Barcelona this time. Took the shuttle into the Ramblas..for a stroll..but millions of people were there at night..lots of entertainers..and living statues. Amazing the effort and imagination.these young people put into inventing all sorts of unique acts. It was lovely with all the lights..and fountains in the square. We then had a tour the next day.

Villefranche..is absolutely beautiful in itself. Picture postcard..you anchor in the harbour. We took the local bus to Monaco and the casino at Monte Carlo. where we filmed loads of the very rich arriving.. in very, very expensive cars..Elton John was in town. Someone on the ship..got his photo. Then corsica..a beautiful island..and a wander around the harbour and street markets. Palma Majorca..and Malaga.were my first time there..absolutely beautiful. Very hot.. but sustainable. Gorgeous buildings..an amazing cathedral as you enter. Lots of friendly people..green areas..parks. monuments. It was a festival in Malaga..and we saw all the families coming into the center..with their children dressed in costumes. All the little girls in gorgeous flamenco outfits..and the special flowers for their hair being sold everywhere. Lastly Vigo... and Lisbon. A tour in Lisbon..and a great chance to see the bridge in detail this time..the sister to the Golden Gate..the ship "just" passes under it. A wonderful city of many beautiful buildings..statues..and waterfront areas. The tour took us to the Belem tower..across the bridge to the large statue of Christ and many panoramic views of our ship..through the old and new areas of the city..and the lovely carved monument to the explorers..I really loved Lisbon..and would like to spend some time there. We arrived in ports later this time..and sailed at various times as well..which I much preferred. Also 3 nights in port. Sailing 2am..10pm..and one overnight stop. I was able to see all the arrivals and sailaways..which are very exciting to me.

Well ..that is our 2 cruises in a nutshell. I don't know how it will vary next year...as the ports are even more intense. But the shows..food..and parties.. they put onboard for us this year...Plus the amazing service.. far surpassed last year. And we were totally overwhelmed the first time. all the best... Sorry this is a bit long...Regards, carol

Hi again Carole

You are obviously sailing on the cruise directly after us,although we are doing the Greece and Med.

Thanks for the info regarding the Captain we will definately take him up on his offer lol..

We have also booked a night pre and post cruise in Rome,to enable us to see all the sights.

Cannot wait...your reviews bring the ship to life without pictures, and I want to be going now.

Hi Carol, Good to see you back, just to let you know we are missing your reports and input pver on SH, wish you were still there!

Sounds like you had another great cruise on LOTS, good, glad you enjoyed it!

Take care, James.

Hi James..It took me a week..but I am finally returning to normal life of a sort. I kept thinking I was still on the ship..and moving..for several days. Almost certainly in protest..for being forced to leave Legend.. It didn't happen last time. I definitely wasn't ready for life in Derby... Nor for the empty fridge and empty cupboards..LOL. Danny and I have been totally exhausted this return...with little sleep before ..during ..or after..the cruise. Just so much going on.

The kids definitely added a lot of stress..but did enjoy it. Not in as lively a manner as we thought..we out partied them shall we say. But in their own way. It was the right thing to take them..and give them a grown up vacation. they did look grand all dressed up..but never on time. We bought a million photos. Including all the tacky ones..just to upset them. LOL. We threatened to make copies of them.. and send them to everyone.

The lads especially loved all the food..and the solarium swimming pool and mini golf. The ship looked great...our cabin was lovely..and the ports were fantastic. Even though we had seen many places already. The kids really enjoyed their adjoining cabins. We Had to boot them out half the time. Get them doing things. The service and dining room menu.. were way up on last year. which was already very, very good.We all did extremely well in the food department. Even one lad.. who is very fussy..ate everything going. I made a point of trying different things this time myself. The girls had no problem with the veggie dishes..delighted were they.

A superb cruise..much more active this time as well.. which really surprised me with the overnight stops...and longer stay in ports. Or the one overnight..should I say... in Barcelona..the 2am sailing in Palma ..surprised everyone. Most thought it was to be the next day. But it all worked out well in the end. Another sea day was great. the only disapointment.. we missed shopping in virtually every port..bar Gib. Palma was on a Sunday..and Malaga a Festival..Lisbon and Barcelona tours..Vigo siesta. Monte Carlo..only the designer stores. I think you were the same itinerary?

There were quite a few extra touches onboard this cruise..the theme nights in the Windjammer for one. Free leather like frames/folders for your photos..with every 3... 8x10's purchased..(they were £10 a time extra last year). I loved the blue striped glasses..that were given away with the cocktails. In the case of the girls lava drinks..it was £2 cheaper getting them... then with my strawberry margharita.. but they seldom would have a drink. I wish I had gotten more..I definitely needed more drinks..and less photos!!!

Many, Many wonderfully friendly passengers onboard. We made lots of friends..and met a few off Ship Happens. We had an even better crew than last year. Loads of laughs with them..All in all a fantastic holiday..that went way too quickly. We also were honoured with a tour of the bridge with Captain Nik..quite a few were along that day. Sadly numbers meant the girls couldn't be included. when we got to the checks to enter... security did have them on the list..and were willing to allow them along in the end.. But they weren't dressed for it..and I am sure they would have caused a delay if they had come. It was very interesting to see. We had a quick photo with the captain..and a hello. We will be sailing with him next summer.

So nice to hear I am missed on Ship Happens..i would think you all would be very glad for a rest from my ramblings... I don't know what is the problem with the site....but nothing comes on at all..except an unauthorized message. Also someone from the site..Peter Armstrong?? has sent an Emai to mel...and an attachment.. Hotmail has permanently blocked any conection to S. H. as unsafe a few days ago. I really don't understand what that means?? or who this person is..or the attachment! anyway, james..trust all your family are well. I Can't believe after all the chats...with so many people over the months..the cruises are all over for this year.. some 30 or more of us..have been and gone on Legend. But how lucky to be able to look forward to next year..something I truly never expected to be saying. Best Wishes to you and your family...keep in touch..all the Best... Carol

Hello rick, John and Anne....I feel like a celebrity with so many messages..how wonderful!!...I guess Legend just brings out the best in everyone....and brings us all together. Like Captain Nik says..A United Nations that really works. But what's not to like about her...and her crew?

Rick..as always.. so nice to hear from you..and thank you for always being so kind..and for your never ending support and friendship.

John..the Ship shape staff in the solarium..looked after my kids famously.Probably the best part of the cruise for them... the lads just loved the burgers and pizza. And all the crew and staff..even security..were so good to our twin daughters.. They just couldn't get over how identical they were..and that they choose to dress the same. It was Quite a laugh to see both their photos up on the security screen..as you entered back onto the ship..and the security staff playing spot the difference.

Murphy...I liked your secret stairway..I thought I found all the hiding places. My favourite..I loved it on deck 4...promenade deck.. outside the dining room..how you could go all the way aft..to wear the flag waves..and watch the wake. We stood here sailing from Malaga..it was brilliant pulling away from the pier. Lots of people waving at us.

Our cabin was only a deck 3 the past 2 times..but we loved it. Port side..midship..oceanview..3038. But next year we are moving up...to a balcony..deck 7. quite a difference.. next to the library.. starboard side. Cabin 7560. anyone know anything about it..Id' love to hear. I know I will like the bigger space and the balcony..just a question of pinning me down to use it. It is just so exciting wandering around the ship.

Anne..I am glad you have your room already sorted in Rome..where abouts have you chosen? I will start looking into that soon. We fly out of Birmingham..but I don't know HOW we will get within the baggage allowance! I am so used to taking absolutely everything..no matter where I go.. So Long for now..it is really lovely to have made so many friends..wishing you all happy cruises..and please keep in touch. Fondly, Carol

I haven't stayed in exactly 7560, but we were just a few cabins forward of there for our Panama Canal. You'll love it! Should be quiet next to the Library... ha, ha, ha! and obviously convenient to the elevators. The cabin bath will probably be very similar to what you had on deck 3. Shower etc. The cabin will be much bigger. Bed is next to the bath and the sitting area is next to the balcony. It has a full size sofa and nice coffee size table for dining if you wish. The TV is on a swivel and can be seen from the bed or the sofa. The balconies in those cabins aren't huge, but are great for sipping coffee in the morning and waving hello and good bye to your port!

And yes, I love the outdoor promenade on deck 4. Awesome!

Hi Carol, Think you will love it, we have stayed in 7560, nice room, very central to everything, but for the last couple of years we have had an aft JS on deck 8, we just love to sit out on the extra large balcony and watch the wake of the ship and enjoy a pre dinner drink out there with friends.

Like you I seem to pack too much...I know what you mean about the airlines and what we will be able to carry.

Where can fit everything???

By the way how many formal nights were there?

At the risk of being shouted down by others on the forum, .....I love to get dressed up,.and our two lads looked great last year, and look forward to the same next year.

We have booked Hotel Modigliani, which has some good reviews, and also had two triple rooms on the top floor with balconys over looking over the

city.I tried Hotel Mozart but their triple rooms were already booked.......

It appears that Hotels and tours get booked VERY early,I was so surprised as it is still a year out before we go

Carol Thank You for all the information on your Europe cruises! Very helpful. The one on Legend I am looking at has some of the new itneraries so it should be fun. Just checking prices. Can't decide between Europe and Hawaii/Tahiti! What a choice to make!

I Loved the UK. Spent 5 wonderful weeks in Oxford where I went through a university exchange program.

we are on deck 8 room j 8519 -- Is the pool noise from up above noisey in the morning when they are setting up the pool area? Do you think we should move to deck seven.

Are the dessert good that is one thing I look forward to on a cruise. I have never cruised with rcl.

Beds- Are they new? I have a bad back should I bring my topper for the bed (memory foam)>

Glad you had a good time Carol, seems like you all enjoyed yourselves! Thats all that counts, we were on teh same itinery as well, and the 2am sailing from Palma confused many as well, they seemed to think they were getting an additional 24 hours there!

Yes all the cruises are pretty much over for this year, but we wont be sailing next yaer, as one of our children has now stepped up to adult rate and our youngest will be paid for as a full child so it makes it quite expensive for the next few years, so will have to make do with a week in Spain or something, but in a few years time maybe, we will cruise again, cant wait.........

As for Ship Happens, someone sent me a mail saying you had been 'banned' for what reason I have no idea, many people have been asking after you, all seems a bit strange to me!

Anyway, all the family this end is doing well, and trust all yours are as well, take care and speak soon.

Hi 6 months.. Been babysitting my little grandaughter the past few days. Thanks so much for the information on cabin 7560...I think I will definitely enjoy it. It will be Quite a change being right upstairs..(I can use the posh glass elevators) and I am Closer to the photographers..LOL. I am always one of his best customers. They are a real pleasure..especially those of the kids this year. The photos keep the memories going... all through the dreary English winters.

I don't blame you loving your JS. aft cabin. The best spot on the ship...I should think. watching the ship's wake...just wonderful.. That is why I loved aft on deck 4..you are so close to the water.. the noise from the wake is deafening at times. I look forward to seeing that balcony on 7560 for the first time.. it will seem amazing to us..and the 50% bigger cabin space. will be fantastic.. Regards, Carol

Hi Anne...sorry I have not replied sooner... been away a few days..thanks so much for the information on your hotel in Rome. I will look into it...and check what is available. I too..think that the cheaper places will book up Quite early... as lots of cruises and summer package holidays will use them. We are ,unfortunately, traveling in high season..

I am glad someone else admits to packing way too much. But actually.. with the formal clothes and casual..and smart casual..needed onboard.. all the odds and ends as well..it was very sensibly packed. I do not know how so many people...had only one bag and a holdall or 2..but managed to have all they needed and look smart all the time. But many did!! I guess at my age..I need a lot more help!! LOL...

Whatever it takes with the airlines next year..obviously I will have to meet the requirements somehow. Perhaps with a bigger cabin..something we never expected..it will be less of a worry as well. I took tons of thin hangers..and clip type for multi hanging...in order to fit it all in our tiny wardrobe. This year I added.. fold up.storage boxes to condense small stuff..and group it in one place.. instead of all over...and a shoe holdall to hang 10 pairs of shoes.. etc. Will leave all of that stuff behind. Incidently..We had 3 formal nights on both the med cruises from southampton. So long for now..Regards, Carol

Thanks for the info Carol! Gabrielle

Hello gabrielle....So glad you are enjoying the info on Legend..what a choice you have indeed..Europe...or Hawaii/Tahiti... Couldn't be more different. I hope whichever you choose... it is just fantastic. I am so glad you liked the UK. Oxford is lovely...I have sadly not been there personally..but intend to one day. WE Passed by on our way to Southampton to board Legend. Coming from the midlands.. just outside Derby..near nottingham. We are not far actually from Oxford.... probably 90 minutes. I am originally from near Ft. Lauderdale in florida...moving to the Uk in 1981..when I married. Keep in touch if you can..wishing you all the best, Carol:)
