Best way to get around NOLA?

5 of us flying in, staying at Holiday Inn Select Convention Center. I'm trying to decide if it is best to rent a car for a day and drop it off downtown or take a cab? Also weighing on this decision; can you walk with bags to the cruise terminal from the hotel (ages range 17-48). I keep hearing about the trolley, does it run close to the hotel? If not, how is the walk from hotel to French Quarter and back? Thanks!

The cruise terminal is close to the hotel, but you have to go around the Convention Center to get there, the equivalent of about five blocks.

The easiest way to get there is to walk down Julia Street (just north of the hotel) towards the Riverwalk. Cross the tracks and there is a roadway to your right, which goes to the terminal. There will be lots of traffic, so be careful. There is also a Riverfront Trolly stop there, but it doesn't go far enough to be very helpful.

You can go to the same trolly stop to ride to the French Quarter, but that's an easy walk too: about eight blocks.
