GATOR MOM Posted December 15, 2006 #1 Share Posted December 15, 2006 A lot of folks from the Pacific Northwest post on these Alaskan boards...& I just wanted to say that our prayers & thoughts are with you all during this terrible weather. Stay Safe...I also hope for the best for the climbers on Mt Hood. :o

vjblk Posted December 15, 2006 #3 Share Posted December 15, 2006 Thanks, Gator Mom! It was quite a storm. 4 out of 5 of us in our office had no power today. I'm lucky in that I hardly ever lose power. It was quite a storm though. Heard the wind howling past the house last night. It's going to be awhile before they get everyone back into the light. Again thanks for the good thoughts. I too am hoping there is a good outcome for those climbers on Mt Hood.
mbisson Posted December 16, 2006 #4 Share Posted December 16, 2006 Valerie My kids work at Snoqualmie Summit. No power there either, the lifts are closed but they still had to go in today. Yakima is still having some power problems also. I'm in Eburg and CWU has closed down early yesterday and again today. At noon here today it was 45 degrees out and everything that fell yesterday was well on it's way to melting. By 1 it was snowing steadily and now the wind has picked up and it's almost like a blizzard out. The wind took away both my garbage cans, and I have no idea where they are now LOL. Guess I'll be buying some more tomorrow! It's really not as bad here as it could be even if the wind did wake me up a couple times last night. -Monte
Sailorgirlseattle Posted December 16, 2006 #5 Share Posted December 16, 2006 Awww, thanks! We're fine, but when we got home from the Seahawks game last night we found a HUGE limb down in our backyard. Took out our fence and did some other minor damage. Our friends on the east side of Lake Washington have no power, and they report a LOT of damage, wind and water damage, and very little electricity on anywhere. They're headed over here now to spend the night with us.
GATOR MOM Posted December 16, 2006 Author #6 Share Posted December 16, 2006 Sounds like you guys are doing OK...just find those garbage cans, Monte! I know things are bad out there & hope all are doing as well as you. Know the feeling with hurricanes down here...but I can't imagine it with blowing snow. Take care :)
Quilting_Cruiser Posted December 16, 2006 #7 Share Posted December 16, 2006 That was so nice of you! We didn't have power for 2 1/2 hours last night--spent some quality time with DH and DD--lit the candles and just chatted--it was nice. :) DD didn't have school today due to power outages. I'm just thankful the trees in the backyard are still standing--they'd have nowhere to fall but on the house! Thanks for your kind thoughts! Jayne :)
LeftcoastBC Posted December 16, 2006 #8 Share Posted December 16, 2006 thanks for the thoughts... Lots of trees down and houses wrecked in the Lowermainland and Vancouver Island of BC . Roofs etc missing. No fatalities however 250000 customers w/o power Sounds like Washington State got it worse that us.
GATOR MOM Posted December 16, 2006 Author #9 Share Posted December 16, 2006 You all are quite welcome for a few good thoughts to get thru the storms...I know the feeling to have no power...it is not fun...but yes, it does give you quality time with family...no TV, no Computer...all those things that keep us occupied. I hope the weather clears up fast...& hope you all have a wonderful holiday:)
dirtgirl Posted December 17, 2006 #10 Share Posted December 17, 2006 Thank you for your kind thoughts. :) We were without power for 5 hours, but we were the lucky ones! Then it snowed overnight, to add insult to injury!
mbisson Posted December 17, 2006 #11 Share Posted December 17, 2006 It got down to 8 degrees F here last night. They said on the news there are still 10,000 people without power in our county. Hope they found some way of heating their homes or there are gonna be a lot of busted pipes!
Italy52 Posted December 17, 2006 #12 Share Posted December 17, 2006 We just moved from Renton, WA about 10 months ago. Left behind some good neighbors. Anyone know if Renton got hit real hard?
GATOR MOM Posted December 18, 2006 Author #13 Share Posted December 18, 2006 Well...you all seem to be having the effects of a hurricane...no power...downed trees...I feel for you because a hurricane does not bring temps of 8 degrees. Continue to stay safe...And somehow keep warm.
Toyz711 Posted December 18, 2006 #14 Share Posted December 18, 2006 finally got a hold of some family in lacy, they lost power just after 12am on friday...by 9am still no power. they went to the casino, they always have power. when they went home after 4pm, no power. by about 10pm, got their power back. they do a lot of camping and have a fireplace, they could have handle it...just glad they didn't have to be on the roads too much. the niece in north seattle had power at her house, but not at her work. Continue to stay safe...And somehow keep warm. Most of us have power back. Only one of the 5 emergency shelters in our small county is still open (according to the news). Many just braved it at home. Low tonight is expected to be 1, but that happens in Dec in Central & Eastern Washington. We're fine. -Monte
Sailorgirlseattle Posted December 18, 2006 #16 Share Posted December 18, 2006 I think the hotels filled up pretty quick, and lots of other people went to stay with family and friends. I think the Eastside and North Seattle got hit the hardest ... pretty much THE WHOLE Eastside was dark. Microsoft was completely dark. Mostly all coming back up now though. I think no electricity in the cold is probably better than no electric in the heat and humidity. At least you can pile on the blankets! Then again, I was one of the lucky with power through this whole thing. And I AM grateful.

I agree EXCEPT when pipes freeze! However, I know a couple plumbers that disagree with me ;) BTW-just got an email from a brother in the Portland area-His home got hit by 2 trees! -Monte
GATOR MOM Posted December 19, 2006 Author #18 Share Posted December 19, 2006 I had to laugh, Sailorgirl, re your comment that you would rather have no power in the cold ( pile on sweaters) then no power in the heat & then no air conditioning. I agree 100%...it is not fun...when we lose power it also means no power to the pumps that work the toilets...no pumps to work the outflow of water = no shower, no flush. Yes...it is fun!!! We tend to shower in the driveway with the garden hose!!! But...I do feel bad for those out there with no power. Happy to hear things are starting to power up again. I had no idea temps fell to 1 degree out there...yes...the plumbers will be happy with all the frozen pipes. Still have those Mt Hood climbers in our thoughts...it doesn't sound good for them. Do hope all continue with minor problems & stay warm !!
Rare Gardyloo Posted December 19, 2006 #19 Share Posted December 19, 2006 Also want to say thanks. We finally fled to a dog-friendly motel and are still here. A cedar tree in our back yard took out our fence, wires and transformer in the alley, and the back corner of our neighbor's 5-day old Jeep. No human injuries, thanks be, but boy is our house dark and cold. Seattle City Light says tomorrow, but they said that yesterday, too. Talk about a bunch of tired utility crews... GATOR MOM Posted December 19, 2006 Author #20 Share Posted December 19, 2006 Sure hope your power comes back soon...when we get hit with massive outages power crews come in from all over...other states...hope same there to give the Washington crews a break. Continue to stay safe.
mbisson Posted December 19, 2006 #21 Share Posted December 19, 2006 I had no idea temps fell to 1 degree out there...yes...the plumbers will be happy with all the frozen pipes. !! Only on the East side of the Cascades and the builders on this side insulate homes much better than on the Westside. Actually 1 isn't bad -10 to -20 make me cranky though. -Monte
GATOR MOM Posted December 20, 2006 Author #22 Share Posted December 20, 2006 Minus 10 ...yes I would be cranky too! I use to live in Chicago...on the shores of Lake Michigan...yes...it was cold & yes...I did get frozen pipes...it's not fun!
stan wood Posted December 20, 2006 #23 Share Posted December 20, 2006 This has been a crazy six weeks of winter. November set an all-time record for precip, a snowstorm that took our lights out for four days (14 inches of wet snow that froze and removed many branches), and then the windstorm. Possibly the best news is that it appears that most people did not lost their lights for both storms. Maybe the most ironic part of the story is that this was to be an El Nino winter which up here usually means warmer and drier than normal. So far, they are way off.
