Cigar Smokers

I posted a thread about Ft Lauderdale Hotels and got some really good information. Thanks. We have booked a veranda on the Zuiderdam in March. I am a cigar smoker and would like to smoke on our veranda. I realize that this would be a nono inside the ship and is allowed outside. Any thoughts other than the standard criticism.

It's your veranda and you have every right to smoke out there. The passengers in your cabin the next cruise might be very grateful you smoked out there rather than inside the cabin.

 

You might consider noticing if your neighbors are outside when you go out to smoke and asking them if it disturbs them. Some people fell they can't enjoy their balcony when there is smoke coming from elsewhere. If everyone is considerate it should be possible to work out a solution agreeable to everyone.

I'm married to an occasional cigar smoker.

 

When not on your balcony, you'll be able to enjoy your smoke up on the top deck. ;)

Go for it. The neighbors can live with it for the 20 minutes it takes to smoke one. I, like you, smoke occasionally & I have never had any complaints while on my balcony. It is perfectly acceptable. Enjoy!

My DH smokes a pipe. Have never had a problem with other passengers with him smoking on our balcony or up on the top deck. I believe there is a smoking room some where near one of the bars where you can smoke a cigar. Not sure exactly where it is though.

The Zuiderdam has the Oak Room, off the Crow's Nest where cigar smoking is allowed - in fact, I think it also has cigars for sale.

My DH is an occasional cigar smoker, and he loves to smoke on cruises because he can buy some great cigars at places the cruise ship goes, and Tampa has some great cigar stores. On the Vista ships there is a cigar room next to the Crow's nest which is very nice and where the smokers and their friends go in the evenings. Our latest cruise was on the Veendam, and their "Cigars under the Stars" was held at the Lido Bar.

Just a casual observation to add.......

 

We were on our veranda for sailaway from one of the ports. DH and I both smelled pipe smoke and it was quite strong so we thought if from our neighbor's veranda but it wasn't. While we continued to smell it for the whole time we watched our sailaway we never determined where it was coming from but it was very strong.

 

I mentioned it later to someone who's cabin was on our deck but a fair distance away. He also smelled it.

 

The pipe smoker did nothing wrong. He is entitled to enjoy his pipe.

My only point is that I truly believe he/she (? :) ) probably would be very surprised to learn how far his smoke drifted and how many people were impacted by it. I never would have believed that outside, on a moving ship, smoke could carry to so many fellow cruisers' verandas.

One of my favorite pastimes on cruises, is to enjoy a fine cigar. The wife and I love to meet other cigar smokers, and find that the 'cigars under the stars' is great. We've met many lifelong friends there. As for smoking on your veranda, it offers a nice place for solitude, and you don't have to 'dress up'.

Don't smoke myself, never have, but I feel that, unlike cigarets, some cigars (and pipes) have a very nice odor/smell to them. I personally don't see any problems with someone smoking a cigar and/or pipe on their balcony.

Now if I was the smoker and someone next door to me complained because of health issues, second-hand smoke, etc. etc., I would try to accomodate that person or persons by trying to make sure that they weren't outside on theirs when I was doing my smoking on mine;). We all have to adjust, adapt, improvize, overcome, etc. at times!

Noordam has already instituted no smoking in the casino

 

other ships have decreased the space devoted to smokers in Ocean Bar, and Explorers

 

IMHO, it's really not too difficult to understand .. the percentage of smokers across the board has decreased to about 20-25% of the population .. simple math therefore shows the non-smokers are at about 75-80% .. the numbers of non-smokers will continue to increase

 

if I had to "guess", I believe the future will feature smoking rooms for cigarettes much like there are smoking rooms for cigars (the Oak Room) on board Vista ships

 

like it or not, the insurance companies will probably be the "swing vote" on this issue .. if premiums soar because of smoking accidents or the amount of areas where smoking is permitted, expect Seattle to react accordingly

Not on Eurodam - the Oak Room and the smoking room adjacent to the Explorers Lounge has been eliminated from the ship.* Plus the Explorer's Lounge smoking room on Noordam has been turned into a Turkish Rug Shop.

I have asthma and can't be around smoke (cigars, cigarettes or pipe). To me, cigars are the worst. The smell lingers for a long time and as someone previously wrote, the smoke travels a good distance. That said, I believe smokers are fully entitled to use their balcony to smoke. I would, however, recommend not doing so during sail away times so as many people as possible can enjoy their balcony too.

 

I have never asked someone to stop smoking so I could use my balcony (I would like to, but never have the nerve). Instead, I go back inside when someone starts to smoke and have been disappointed that I missed the great sunset or sail away. Maybe next time I'll ask politely. But sometimes it's impossible to figure out where it's coming from.

 

I think it's very considerate of the OP to be concerned about others on the ship. We all need to be sensitive to others needs and/or health concerns.

Noordam has been conducting an experiment by making the casino non-smoking during recent cruises. It was Wonderful for those of us who sometimes have to avoid playing due to the smoke being too heavy. We don't spend a ton of time in the casino but like to roam in for a while and play a bit. On Maasdam and Ryndam this past year, we could not spend any time in the casino.

 

Which would you try to please? The 80% who are non-smokers or the 20% who smoke? IF THE CASINO REVENUE REMAINS CONSTANT **** or even increases ****, it seems reasonable to think the casino will remain smoke free on Noordam and, possibly, may extend to the rest of the fleet.

 

It's a win-win. Insurance companies are happy. Fire hazard is reduced. Revenue is constant or better and 80% of the passengers are happy.

 

Regretfully for those who wish to continue to smoke, the majority is going to be accomodated.

 

Times (and number of smokers) have changed since the days of Carnival's non-smoking ship, Paradise. In today's world, a non-smoking (or smoking permitted in limited areas) cruise is going to be well received by most.

I think smoking a cigar on a balcony is disturbing to those on balconies nearby--or perhaps, not so near by. If cigar smker wants to smoke on balcony, hopefully it's a periodic thing so others can use their balcony smoke-free some of the time.

DH also does like to smoke cigars on a cruise ship. He really likes the Oak Room. I like it too--on formal nights he goes up to Oak Room for a cigar and brandy. I then have extra time to get ready fro dinner! :) We meet up in Ocean Bar, then go to dinner!

I just finished a cruise on the Constellation. I smoked about 4 Cigars on my Veranda. Didn't have any problems what so ever.

Why is it that everytime someone asks an innocent question about smoking it leads to others pontificating on the habit. Let the guy or girl know they can smoke and leave it at that. They will smoke with or without your sermon. For the moment at least HAL welcomes all, and personally I don't want to live in a place where others, including insurance companies, dictate life style. What if HAL said that everyone carrying more than twenty pounds of excess weight could not cruise, because of the risk of heart disease, diabetes etc...... How many of us would not be crusing..?

As a "sometime cigarette smoker", married to a "sometime cigar smoker", vacations are when we enjoy our fun....whether it be nicotine or alcohol.
