WvW Posted February 8, 2007 #3 Share Posted February 8, 2007 As a cruise fan, this will be (one of) the highlights of my 2-year stay in Australia. I am planning a whole day around it to get the most out of it. Any (Sydney-based)fans who would like to comment on my program and has good tips, please respond! Preliminary day program: 05.45am arrive by train at Central (after 3 hrs ride from newcastle) 06.00am get with taxi to Mrs. Macquarie's Chair to see the ship sail into her berth and dock from as close as possible 06.30am scheduled docking time at Wooloomooloo pier In the morning: Visit to Centerpoint viewing tower for panoramic photo's of the cityskyline with the ship clearly in the middle. Walk over Sydney harbor bridge (traffic level) for photo's of the Opera house and hopefully a good view of the ship in the background Afternoon: I have already purchased a ticket for the famous bridgeclimb, ofcourse the best view over the harbor and the ship. What better day for a groupphoto on top of the bridge with the ship in the background? Evening: Ofcourse watching the QE2 arrive and pass her sistership. Not sure yet of the best location for the best viewing and angle to get both ships in one photo. I AM THINKING OF CREMORE POINT (any suggestions??) Watching the fireworks, again: not sure what is the best position. Does anyone know where the fireworks are ignited? Is this from Harbor bridge?? Again what is the best viewing position, possibly to get and the ship and the fireworks at one photo 11.00pm Watching QM2 leave. In the middle of the night, arrive home, exhausted but satisfied, posting all photo's on the web. Again: ANYONE WITH GOOD TIPS, PLEASE ADVISE TO GET EVEN MORE OUT OF THIS EXCITING DAY!! guernseyguy Posted February 8, 2007 #4 Share Posted February 8, 2007 I once had a great view of the QE2 as she slowly sailed down the Harbour from the Manly ferry - a round trip might be a good option. Peter
cusyl Posted February 8, 2007 #5 Share Posted February 8, 2007 Sounds like a wonderful plan, only thing better would be to be onboard. Look forward to the pictures. :D
PennyAgain Posted February 8, 2007 #6 Share Posted February 8, 2007 When I was in Sydney I booked a 3 day Harbour 'cruise' with the Captain Cook Company. The Explorer. The ship toured us around the entire Harbour area. Any chance you could book something with one of their ships (they have a lunch and dinner cruise as well) and get some photos from the Harbour? We were the only non-Australians on that 3 day cruise and had a wonderful time. The Australians wouldn't let our wine glasses go empty. What hospitality! This little cruise was the highlight of our time in Australia. Looking forward to seeing your photos.

ocngypz Posted February 14, 2007 #9 Share Posted February 14, 2007 Passengers embarking the QM2 in Sydney will have to report to the Overseas Circular Quay for check-in. Then they will be transferred over to Garden Island by Cunard.
Titanorac9370 Posted February 16, 2007 #10 Share Posted February 16, 2007 Hi all. Me and Graham fly to Sydney from Harrow in North London at 7.00pm tonight. I have butterflies in my stomach as I type! I have been to Sydney twice before and when I looked at the QM2 construction photos coming through on the net back in 2003 I always wondered what it would be like when QM2 arrived in Sydney for the first time. What would the welcome be like? I decided there and then that I would find out. It is something I promised myself years ago and I can't believe it's about to happen. I have seen QE2 and QM2 many times down in Southampton. I saw QM2 come in on Boxing Day 2003 and watched her leave on her maiden voyage on 12 January 2004. On 16 April 2005 we saw the two Queens leave Southampton together but this will be just amazing to see them together again in the beautiful city down under. We have a boat trip arranged to meet QM2 as she arrives in Sydney Heads and will escort her through Port Jackson to her berth at Garden Island. We will also watch the fireworks and escort QM2 back out again late on Tuesday evening. Let's hope for a beautiful sunny day! After that we have two weeks to go up north for a three day diving trip on the Great Barrier Reef and then we head back to Sydney for the Mardi Gras. Here's to 24 hours of utter bliss in a 747. (When oh when will they invent a cross between an ocean liner and an airliner?) Cheers, love Rich

Cheers, Penny...soon again to be "live from the QM2"...well, in 267 days but who's counting....
Chivalrygirl Posted February 17, 2007 #12 Share Posted February 17, 2007 Today in Auckland there is a huge exclusion zone right around the whole port of Auckland, both land and sea, possibly you will get the same in Sydney, might be worth checking out, as there is no point whatsoever here trying to get close to the ship. Its just a no, go!

Yep it kinda pisses you off, but that is what today's security is all about. Find a really good vantage point, you will still have an awesome experience if today's proceedings in Auckland is anything to go by. Just watched her sail at 10.30 pm, an amazing site. RobertQM2 Posted February 19, 2007 #17 Share Posted February 19, 2007 Hi Peter, just watching QM2 via bridgecam making a U-turn in front of the "coat hanger" bridge. Thank you very much for the article, I really like the pic of QE2's stern whith wonderful lines not to find on any of the present ships. On the other hand I can remember our visit to Sydney at the change of the millenium with the fireworks. I'm sure this will happen to the QUEENS today too. All the best from Austria (not Australia ;-)

Oahucruiser Posted February 20, 2007 #21 Share Posted February 20, 2007 Go to http://www.news.com.au and look at the second article on the left. Ten stunning photos and a video of her arrival into Sydney as well as a long write-up. Hope they keep this on the web site for a while. The one that was there this morning was replaced by this one quite quickly. Patti
