l929 Posted April 3, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 3, 2004 I just won a bid on e-bay for a two way radio with a 5 mile range for our upcoming cruise. Now I read that I'm supposed to apply for a FCC license to use it. Do people really get this? Does it apply in the Carribbean, which I would think is outside the FCC's jurisdiction, but then is it a problem with those countries? Did I just waste my money? Help! ChardonnayKJ Posted April 4, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 4, 2004 Family radios usually don't require that, but most have a reange for 1 or 2 miles. 5 miles might require it. Call radio shack and ask them they might know 6/27 Conquest let's party!
jimcald Posted April 5, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 5, 2004 If you buy the 5 mile radios you "should " send in your $75 for the license. The 2 mile radios work only on the frs band and don't require a license. The 5 mile radios work on both the GMRS and FRS bands. The GMRS band is what requires the license. The FCC has said that radios that will do both require the license. See: http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/personal/generalmobile/ Hope this helps... Jim... MidtheNight Posted April 21, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 21, 2004 The FCC does not have jurisdiction outside the US of A however be careful not to interfere with shipping communications. There are certain frequencies that ship typically use and are essential for them. Kind of like the "be kind, please rewind" mentality...however, it is kind of neat to listen in when they are docking....they talk to the dockmaster as they come in and dock so you'll know what their doing before anyone else onboard.
