Lap Top use From Deck??

Has anyone out there tried using a lap top from deck while in port in Alaska? Can you pick up a signal from the towns you dock in & maybe save $$ on Ship Internet fees. Thx for any advice:)

Anyone with a network close to the docks very quickly learns to protect it. You'll get lots of networks, but all password-protected.

There's a rumor of an open network in Juneau right now. It would only (probably) work from the first birth by Marine Park, where the HAL ships dock. The lady in the candle shop next to the Red Dog uses it all the time.

 

Otherwise, Seaport Cyber sells access. Just pick up the network "Seaport" and follow their credit card payment system through to login. I'm pretty sure their credits work in all covered ports, and it's GOT to be cheaper than what the ship charges...
