NCL unauthorized charges

We just got in from the 2/18 Spirit cruise...when I checked my Amex account online, there are pending charges of about $1000 that I never authorized. I called Amex right away, and they told me they couldnt do anything about it until the charges are actually posted. They did confirm that all the pending unauthorized charges are from NCL.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

So much for my stress free vacation:(

Did you use that card to secure your onboard account? Maybe it's the 'hold' NCL puts on the card incase you don't pay the bill off in cash before you get off the ship?

You aren't going to get an answer here. Your best bet would be to call NCL and find out what it is.

I'm curious to know if you checked your statement that was delivered to your cabin on the last night of your cruise? If so and there were NO charges on it that you did not authorize, did you keep it? If not, you may have a hard time proving that any charges incurred are not your responsibility. At any rate you should contact NCL and have a copy of your final bill sent to you immediately. Good luck !!!!:)

The cruise line puts a hold on your card when you register at the beginning of the cruise. As long as your on board charges did not exceed that hold amount, the charge will disappear in a few days. The same thing happens at a lot of gas stations. You may only put $10.00 on your card, but you may see a $50.00 hold for a day or two.

We were on the Spirit in January. We had a $200 TEMP charge on our credit card from when NCL was testing the card. About 3 days after we got back from the cruise all the real charges had become permanent and the $200 TEMP charge had disappeared. The final charges were exactly as stated on the statement that was sent to our stateroom, and we verified those against our receipts that same evening we received the statement, on our last night at sea.

We were on the NCL Pearl..we checked our final statement before we left the ship and it was correct...we got home and there was about 100 more on th card then what we charged. I could not get thru to NCL, on hold for 45 minutes and nothing..

I have been watching the card and the posted amount was the one we had on the final statement and the other "pending charges" have dropped off...

what was really funny(or maybe not)was that there was one charge for the NCL Spirit and we were not on the Spirit but the Pearl!!!!!

We recently sailed NCL Star. On the last day we found out we still had $10 of unused onboard credit, so we went to the pursers desk to drop off the incabin mini bar receipt for $10.64 for a coke and a nip for the plane ride home. I asked if the cabin steward would charge me too because I was paying at the purser's desk before leaving the ship, and they said no.

Yesterday I saw a new charge on my card for $10.64. I knew they were going to screw this up.

Pending charges....This has happened to us on the last 3 cruises. This is a normal process. We have 2 NCL credit cards thru Bank of America. We had over $2000.00 of pending charges on one card and $2636.00 on the other card. But I also had local pending charges from My local grocery store (Safeway) and the gas station. All you have to do is just verify your total charges after about a week. In fact our room bill didn't show up on our card until the 3rd day after we got back in port. We were on the Pearl 3 weeks ago and a couple of the Pending charges that showed up were for The Dawn....:)

Since this was first posted I thought the thread title was misleading. When you give NCL your credit card, they on what you sign specifically are told that they seek authorization that may put a hold on your card. These temporary authorizations are done by almost everyone who accepts your card. They tend to fall out quickly on land as the amount of authorization and the charge amount is the same so the temp drops off. When NCL does it for an estimated amount and then adds as they see how your use your sign card(instead of putting one through for a thousand dollars like some rental car companies do), since the amount of the final charge and authorization are different they tend to stay on your card longer, but this is no way an unauthorized charge. It may differ from your final charge but it is in fact authorized by you(whether you like it or not). Happened to me last week and the temps have now been removed--I didn't call. It can be a problem if you are near your credit limit as it may show up as two charges against your credit limit(the actual charge and the temp one), but for me its not a problem and it surely isn't something that NCL or any acceptor of credit cards uses to rook you out of the money as the credit card company doesn't pay anything a temporary authorization. As for not using credit cards on ships or any where else, MY NCL card paid for my last 10 day cruise. Carry cash please I find cash on the ground about once every six months. I haven't lost a red cent on a credit card not one penny. But to accuse NCL of fraud just because of this takes a very sick mind, even if you were kidding.

Sid, you are right: we had a $30 charge on our bill after we returned from our HAL cruise. All we did was call the CC company as HAL couldn't seem to identify the charge. It wasn't there when we got our final statement. Our next CC card statement no longer showed the charge.

I don't even bother to check my "pending charges" anymore -- the vast majority of the sum is temporary holds that others have already mentioned, and they all fall out. I only balance my monthly statement, and dispute any unknown charges that come through on that.

To the OP: Wait a while and see if the pending charge drops off. Until it's an actual charge to your credit card, there's nothing that can be done.

And the reason I always use a credit card is to get $3,500 off my next cruise. I'm super excited.:D

I've never made it to $3500, but $1000-$1500 off on each of my last 3 cruises (and expecting the same on my next cruise-1000 pts saved now) can make me a bit more tolerant toward temporary problems :D . So I understand your excitement!

HAL is certainly the class of the mass marketed lines. How did we like HAL? overall we loved it, but I think we are just to casual for the formality of the line. The food was to die for especially the lunch time buffet. Every day, for 10 days I promised not to embarrass myself by eating too much: each day I had to take the promise back.

The library was as good as any I have seen on a cruise ship, complete with the USA today which made DH very happy and the passengers were much friendlier than we expected from what we had read. Our cabin steward did an excellent job, even down to noticing we had brought a lot of wine on board so the first night when we returned from dinner there we 2 wine glasses waiting for us.

we enjoyed the on board lectures about the Panama canal and the daily bridge games (our traveling companions and myself) DH gave up bridge years ago. Poor baby!!!

The downside: lousy casino, not only tight but not friendly: our dining wait staff was particularly helpful or friendly. Originally the table was to be unoccupied, but low and behold 8 people decided, for various reasons, they wanted to change their table. We were brought together. I guess they weren't happy about this and didn't go out of their way to serve us.

The entertainment lacked with the exception of one night and the on board acitivities left a lot to be desired. They did have daily trivia but the participants took it so seriously it just wasn't as much fun as on other lines.

All in all we would try them again: next time, on a 7 day cruise. I think 10 days worked better for us on NCL>

I just returned from the Dawn 2/8 - 2/18 cruise and there where $2400 worth of pending charges on my credit card, and after talking to NCL and my bank I was told that after 5 business days they would drop off. Today is the 5th day and all the pending charges have dropped. The only concern I had was my final bill for less than that amount and my credit card was billed for that on top of the $2400. When I spoke to NCL they had no explanation for the over charges.
